The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Catalyst 8.10 is finally up for grabs.

Yay, X.org 7.4 and 2.6.27 support at last!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Is someone trying to simply change the pkgvers in the PKGBUILD and build it?
I have some strange lock with my HD3640 and I hope the update will solve it.

The patch file needs a tweak, but otherwise it works.  Unfortunately it's still broken with the latest Xorg in testing.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

phoronix claims the way to make it compatible with xserver 1.5 is to install normally and then replace binaries that ubuntu has.
unbelievable that ati would give ubuntu special stuff and not everyone else.
Ubuntu shouldn't have accepted it! Mark Shuttleworth always talks about giving back to the community. telling ATI to get lost would have helped

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

So if I want to try this driver (the changelog mention fix for later AGP card like me) I must not update xorg?
This is very disappointing, I bought this card last week...

Patches and other Really Important Stuff(tm) inclusive, will this new driver work on the ATI X1550?

Windows was made for looking at success from a distance through a wall of oversimplicity. Linux removes the wall, so you can just walk up to success and make it your own.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

I just released catalyst 8.11-0.1 in testing for i686, x86_64 will follow tomorrow. This is not 8.10 and also not 8.11, it's the same prerelease that is in Ubuntu Intrepid.

Hooray!  I'm rather curious, did you have to rip these files out of the Ubuntu release or did ATI give you special access also?  I'm guess the former since I've seen no rumblings on the mailing lists.

They sure have.  I've had a lot of faith in them with everything, but this is getting a little to awkward even for me.

Using the latest from testing, I am still unable to get X going without disabling the Rgbpath.

Does it look like you should set the RgbPath? We've discouraged to set that option since X.Org went modular already, this version doesn't even use it anymore and rfuses to load when you have the entry set.

I took them from the Ubuntu FTP. Those are stripped down sources, but eventually they contain nearly the same files as an official tarball. I didn't get special permission from AMD for these drivers, but I don't care. Ubuntu has permission to redistribue them, and we have permission for all other versions to distribute, so I don't see a problem building binary packages using the ubuntu "sources".

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

i switched to testing repo just because of this smile
I now get one error on boot, complaining about the line
RgbPath         "usr/share/X11/rgb
removing it lets me start X

but performance is MUCH worse. major lagging when even moving a window, or scrolling down a webpage.
could this be an xorg setting? (i'm using the same xorg as before)

I tried radeonHD, which has decent 2D performance, but can't use compiz.

hating my ATI right now!

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Could you check which file /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so is linked to? If it's linked to libglx.xorg, it's a bug. If it's linked to libdri.ati, the fix is to link it to libdri.xorg, if it's linked to libdri.xorg, the fix is to link to libdri.ati.
Please let me know which things you did to fix this so I can update the package and move everything to extra.

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

the file file /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so is linked to libglx.ati...which is also wrong,

when I link libdri.so to libdri.ati everything works but glxinfo gives errors:
X Error of failed request:  BadRequest (invalid request code or no such operation)
Major opcode of failed request:  144 (GLX)
Minor opcode of failed request:  19 (X_GLXQueryServerString)
Serial number of failed request:  13
Current serial number in output stream:  13

In the ati control center it also states no opengl name ..
but dri is enabled in my xorg

(II) LoadModule: "dri"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions//libdri.so
(II) Module dri: vendor="X.Org Foundation"
(II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//fglrx_drv.so
ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 2.0
ABI class: X.Org XInput driver, version 2.0

(EE) AIGLX error: dlopen of /usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so failed (/usr/lib/dri/fglrx_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)

Re: The AMD/ATI Bar & Grill

Try doing the most awful solution known to me:
ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri /usr/lib/dri

That should make the ATI DRI drivers working again. Their libGL.so is trying to load it from the wrong location.

I had to do both of these things, now DRI and compiz work:

ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.xorg /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so
ln -s /usr/lib/xorg/modules/dri /usr/lib/dri

A big thank you again to JGC!  I'll do a hunt for any more bugs now smile

i still get an error (and have to comment out) RgbPath         "usr/share/X11/rgb" under FILES in xorg.conf
also, if i try to maximize VLC while playing a video, it takes about 8 seconds, and is then all blurry for about another 3. (in metacity)
Also have the common problem of major video tearing in any video that isn't fullscreen (in compiz)

any ideas?
