UUID for devices in RAID?

Can UUID's be used to name devices in a RAID? I have a server with a 12 drive RAID6 which uses 3 controllers and I'm always worried about the device names changing or shifting, then if a drive goes bad will I know which one it really is...
I found this http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=582775 someone asking pretty much the same question, but it is a year old and it was never determined if UUID's could be used directly in MDADM or if you had to use some sort of work around.
