Openbox and Xorg 6.8.0 w/composite

I have tried flux, pekwm, waimea and many others. They all did not handle composite very will if at all.
My config is simple torsmo and widow manager with lots of terms and apps, ie. firefox-0.10, thunderbird-0.8, abiword, gnumeric, eterm, etc. All simple.
Openbox handles composite flawlessly, xcomposite -cCF. In addition memory usage is great, very low.
Just thought I would drop a line this is awsome. I wanted something like flux I will be trying transpency soon.
It is worth a try.....and is under active devel.

Re: Openbox and Xorg 6.8.0 w/composite

openbox, ha?
the wm that obeys to standards. I like that.

btw I cannot find any help what this parameters do

mpmgr -h
xcompmgr: invalid option -- h
usage: xcompmgr [-d display] [-n] [-s] [-c] [-a] [-f] [-F] [-C]
[nk@Freud ~]$ man xcompmgr
man: No such file or directory

so see you use more that -cf would you like to explain and/or add that info [or link that say that info] to the wiki page of xapps of ArchLinux (wiki.archlinux.org)
thanks!

Re: Openbox and Xorg 6.8.0 w/composite

I too was amaze by the fact that it follows standards of freedesktop.org. I think waimea will follow suit when the developer gets time. But, openbox has such a leap on the development.
Still have not tried transpency yet. But, pbpanel and torsmo are just awsome!!!

composite is part of the new version of xorg 6.8.0. It allows shadowing of windows.

Composite OPTIONS:
-d display
Specifies the display to manage.

Specifies the display to manage.

-a Automatic server-side compositing. This instructs the server to
use the standard composition rules. Useful for debugging.

-c Client-side compositing with soft shadows and translucency sup-
port.

-f When -c is specified, enables a smooth fade effect for transient
windows like menus, and for all windows on hide and restore
events.

-n Simple client-side compositing.

-s Server-side compositing with hard-edged shadows.

-C When -c is specified, attempts to avoid painting shadows on pan-
els and docks.

-F When -f is specified, also enables the fade effect when windows
change their opacity, as with transset(1).

-S Enables synchronous operation. Useful for debugging.

Re: Openbox and Xorg 6.8.0 w/composite

The deal is the artifact that are left when window redraw sometime with other  window managers. Another thing I have noticed is the memory consumption with: openbox, fbpanel, torsmo running on initial startup 42mb is used. This is the lowest sofar of all of the window managers simular to blackbox/fluxbox. Sofar I really like this WM.

Re: Openbox and Xorg 6.8.0 w/composite

The tip for composite performance is (maybe if its in every single thread someone will notice..):

Get an nvidia card, use the official nvidia driver, add

"Option" "RenderAccel" "true"

to the device section of your xorg.conf (or whatever) file. NVidia's RENDER extension acceleration seems to be very helpful to off-screen compositing. Perhaps ATi will realise this and release a driver that also accelerates RENDER in this way. Also, in the future, reworking of the X acceleration architecture will help with this sort of thing. For a clue as to what is possible, see the KDrive xserver at freedesktop.org.

Re: Openbox and Xorg 6.8.0 w/composite

Heh, don't worry 'bout it. But maybe try a forum search too next time.  smile

Anyway, I just tried Openbox as a replacemnt WM for gnome and it does seem to work nicely with xcompmgr. The windows now maximise without hiding the gnome panel, which is nice.
However, it completely screws up if I use the gnome panel workspace-switcher to switch workspaces, which is a shame. Works fine without xcompmgr.
I expect metacity in gnome 2.8 will improve on things anyway. It has some compositing support itself (turned on through gconf, I think).

Re: Openbox and Xorg 6.8.0 w/composite

I just got the CVS version of Openbox and compiled it. I can not find any artifact anymore produced normally by composite. I will be testing transpancy later tonight. For my needs Openbox is sofar the best WM.

Openbox
fbpanel
torsmo
usual apps....

Re: Openbox and Xorg 6.8.0 w/composite

I had a problem where I made Openbox Gnome's wm, but now when I start gnome, it takes forever to start up, the start-up screen just hangs on openbox.

same problem here.
I do love gnome, but I use openbox / xfce4 instead, until gnome 2.8 hits the stable repos smile
