2.6.27 + Latest Xorg: chips&technologies video broken

Dear All,

This is my first post, so please be patient with me.

I just upgraded my system using pacman -Syu and it installed the latest kernel and the latest version of the Xorg server and video drivers.

My Arch computer is a dual PIII machine with a on-board PCI Chips&Technologies video chip (a CT69030 to be precise). This combination used to work perfectly, but the latest upgrade broke it. The symptoms are as follows:

Starting X using startx results in an error message

'(EE) No devices detected'

and X doesn't start.

If I change the driver to VESA, the logging shows that Xorg finds my CT video chip and X runs, but only with a limited resolution.

If I specify a generic Chips&Technologies video card (using xorgconfig), the CT69030 is detected, but the startup process still fails with the message above.

If I re-install the old version of the Xserver and the xf86-video-chips drivers, X works again.

I have a few questions:

Could this be related to the use of MSI interrrupts? I don't think so, I disabled them, with no effect, and the older version of the driver still works.

Is this a XOrg bug?

Any pointers are welcome!

Regards,

Maarten

Could you put your Xorg.0.log somewhere when this happens?

Re: 2.6.27 + Latest Xorg: chips&technologies video broken

Hi!

Here is my Xorg.0.log file. I configured 'generic C&T' and as far as I can read the logfile, my chipset is found, but the moment it should be accessed, it can not be accessed. Hope you can help!

Re: 2.6.27 + Latest Xorg: chips&technologies video broken

Hmm, first thing to look after is /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so, does it link to libdri.xorg or libglx.xorg (are you using 1.5.2-2?)
Could you print the output of lspci to find out the PCI ID of your videocard? Did you specify it in xorg.conf? If so, try to remove it from there. If not, try to add it with the PCI device found in lspci.

Re: 2.6.27 + Latest Xorg: chips&technologies video broken

Hi!

Thanks for your help so far!

Here is the output from lspci:

01:0c.0 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 61)
01:0c.1 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82xxxxx UHCI USB 1.1 Controller (rev 61)
01:0c.2 USB Controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. USB 2.0 (rev 63)
01:0c.3 FireWire (IEEE 1394): VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6306 Fire II IEEE 1394 OHCI Link Layer Controller (rev 46)
01:0d.0 Multimedia audio controller: Ensoniq ES1371 [AudioPCI-97] (rev 06)
01:0f.0 SCSI storage controller: Adaptec AIC-7892A U160/m (rev 02)

As you can see, my system has two PCI busses, maybe that causing the problem?

I also have a logging from an earlier version of Xorg/chips driver:

Looks fairly identical to the failed one posted earlier. I only noticed that the line

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00:0d:0

in the working version changed to

(II) Primary Device is: PCI 00@00:0d:0

in the non-working version. But I can not judge how significant that is, but it does suggest to me that something has changed in the handling of the PCI bus.

Current installed versions are:

X-server: 1.5.2-2
xf86-video-chips: 1.2.0-2

Specifying a BusID or not makes no difference.

Maarten

Re: 2.6.27 + Latest Xorg: chips&technologies video broken

Hi again,

I forgot to mention the link '/usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libdri.so', it links to libglx.xorg.

Re: 2.6.27 + Latest Xorg: chips&technologies video broken

Could you report this bug upstream at bugs.freedesktop.org? I think it's related to the libpciaccess conversion done in the 1.2.0 driver and the fact that your system has more than one PCI bus.
