usage of cjk w/o X

hi guys!

how would I be able to use cjk for display (and input) in the bash without X?

My system is actually setup with utf8, and all necessary and possible locales are enabled. Why are then the cjk-characters properly displayed within X-terminals, but only as "??" for files' names or messages within 'plain tty'? What (kind of) fonts and what configuration or additional tools (if any) do I need?

And concerning input: how is it possible to change the keyboard layout on the fly in 'plain tty', where there's no scim or s.th. like that (e.g. if I'd use another plugged in keyboard)? How would I configure input methods then, say for Korean and Chinese?

thx a lot!

edit: And, yes, i am not Asian wink

I would start here http://linux-cjk.net/ and get on the mailing list. The devs can give you a real answer.
