HELP: cannot automount CD, USB is OK

Hi There,

On my arch installation, CD-ROM (or DVD) is NOT automounted while USB disks ARE automounted. I have searched the web and also read posts here, verified that I have my username in all possible groups such as optical, storage, hal, disk, dbus, and user "hal" in group disk etc.... I also tried to either add or remove /dev/cdrom, /dev/dvd items in /etc/fstab.  Nothing worked!

I recently switched from gnome to kde, problem persists, it seems nothing to do with gnome/kde.  Also, this problem suddenly appear some day back in time (I forgot when), but I am sure that on day one I install this arch linux, all seemed fine ...

Could anyone please help me diagnose/solve this problem? thanks a lot!

Shannon

Re: HELP: cannot automount CD, USB is OK

hi btartsa,

Thank you for this wiki info. Unfortuantely it does not work for me.  CD-ROM still does not automount after enabling autofs exactly follow that wiki, and rebooted.  What's more it even makes my usb automount worse -- usbstick still automount without problem, but:

1) In KDE's device notification window, I see that usb stick, but the "eject" button for devices is missing. Hence, I have to unmount from command line.
2) If I do this: "sudo umount /media/usbstick", it tell me that no device is mounted there. I have to do "sudo umount /dev/sda2" to unmount the usbstick.

These 2 problem appear after I use autofs.  Now I have removed autofs again sad

Awaiting more hints...

Thanks!

Re: HELP: cannot automount CD, USB is OK

Have you tried commenting ALL the CD-ROM entries in /etc/fstab?
AFAIK they are useful only for progs like wine - just let HAL manage the drive.

Re: HELP: cannot automount CD, USB is OK

hi scarecrow,

I have uncommented these about several months ago, when this problem first appear, but nothing changes.  the strange thing is that this worked fine when this arch is first installed. For some mysterious reason, I found it not working again, because when I insert a blank CD the icon never appear again on desktop (at that time I was using gnome). After a reboot, the blank CD icon appeared.  Now, with a normal CD, even I reboot my pc, the icon does not appear, and no mounted cd-rom in dolphin (or nautilus, before I switch).

Thanks,
Shannon
