Audio recording with arecord

Hi all! I'm trying to record something with arecord with my mic. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 6400, and the audio card plays just fine! But when I try to record the output file is just a bunch of noise sound. What can I try to fine adjust my alsa installation?
