Yep, did the mistake of upgrading xorg and Gnome now only let's me login as a root. It seems that it tries to login and I even get the splashscreen, but it dies back to gdm.
Sorry if there was a thread about this I didn't find.

Are you sure you have the latest version of initscripts? I had a similar problem, caused by permissions of the /tmp/.ICE-unix directory. The last initscripts include a fix that creates these dirs with proper permissions on boot.

Yes, I have the latest initscripts with added lines.

Ok. Sorry, no other clues. GNOME and xorg are working fine here...

Try reinstalling gnome and gdm. I had similar problem with kdm. I fixed it with pacman -S kde.

I did it again. It worked fine until I compiled ati-drivers, ran fglrxconfig and copied XF86Config-4 over xorg.conf.
This guy has the same problem http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … ermissions

Problem solved. It's the DRI section and 'Mode 0666' which needs to be commented out. It was commented in original xorg.conf but not in XF86Config-4.

That actually only let's me login to gnome. I still have no direct rendering.

DRI is actually not working here either. When xorg starts, it's giving an error saying it can't load kernel module i915, and then DRIScreenInit fails. I'm using an onboard mobile Intel videocard and the X driver is i830.
