I just took the plunge and installed the 64 bit version today, but right off the bat my RAM usage has gone way up.
Normally off a fresh boot nothing open I'm using 8-9% RAM (200MB or less), now with nothing open it's 13%. I've added no modules and no daemons beyond my normal. Right now with Firefox, Pidgin, and GGMUD it's 450MB.
Where can I pare it down? I went to Openbox to keep things light as possible.
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.

64 bit systems have a larger memory footprint.

Universally? I'll be damned. I didn't think they were related. To quote Chris Farley, don't I feel like a horse's patoot.

I've got 2GB and have yet to crack 50% even when I'm running everything I want, so that's not what I was concerned about. I was just wondering why it was that under Arch64 I seem to be using more than I used to.

that's the norm eh ??? Not in my neck of the woods....
You might want to try a different browser to slim down the ram usage. That might help. Depending on how many pages/and what you have opened, it can affect ram usage alot. If you want REALLY low ram usage..... boot into a console session, use, lynx, bitlbee, and other command line apps They run with very minimal ram usage

You could maybe pull it off with mplayer...
But even if it did work, it would be a pain.

For me it's irrelevant how cheap memory is.. why get it if I won't use it? What's the point of > 4G memory for day to day use, especially with openbox and all the lightweight setups that people here like to run? Personally I run compiz fusion effects with 2G on my main system and it's more than enough.

Exactly. I do love Openbox, but if I wanted to make use of all my memory I'd be running KDEMod. I'm not a power user or a gamer, I don't think I could use more than a gig if I tried.

4gb norm in AU? you're nuts. Go down to Harvey Norman or DSE, you'll struggle to find any with 4gb out of the box.
1-2 gb is the norm, not 4.
on that note, I need another gig badly, this box only has 1.
