Verifying before I update
(pacman -Syu)
What is this?:
Replace gail with extra/gtk2? [Y/n]
Offline
It's simply telling you that gail will no longer be needed with this gtk2 upgrade. The devs did this, so it can be trusted.
Offline
Thank you :-)! I was very sceptical. Don't want to mess up my system.
Offline
Hmm...
The problem is that libgnomecanvas needs gail, so the upgrade fails. Don't trust devs 100%
Sincerely,
Gour
Offline
Really? The gtk2 packages has "gail=1.22.3" and libgnomecanvas has depends of gail>=1.22.0 so this should work. Can you post you pacman output?

It looks like your problem is more to do with pygtk-doc. The docs are now included in the pygtk package so you can remove that. I'm guessing the libgnomecanvas/gail problem will go away after that.

Thanks. I was not expecting problems with pygtk-docs.
Everything is OK now

I have a question.
Since I've replaced gail with extra/gtk2 I can't use some applications like checkgmail or workaholic.
For example, if I try to run checkgmail, this is the returned error message (translated from Catalan):
Unknown graphic file format at /usr/bin/checkgmail line 3018.
Perl exited with active threads:
1 running and unjoined
0 finished and unjoined
0 running and detached
And Workaholic works but when it's time for rest and the program should lock the screen this is what happens indeed:
Exception in thread Thread-1:
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/python2.5/threading.py", line 486, in __bootstrap_inner
self.run()
File "/usr/lib/workaholic/workaholic.py", line 257, in run
pixbuf = gtk.gdk.pixbuf_new_from_file(os.path.join(img_dir, "logo.png"))
GError: Unknown graphic file format «/usr/lib/workaholic/../../share/workaholic//images/logo.png»
Any idea? Tanks in advance.

After this update I'm getting problems with alacarte:
"Failed to contact configuration server; some possible causes are that you need to enable TCP/IP networking for ORBit, or you have stale NFS locks due to a system crash. See http://www.gnome.org/projects/gconf/ for information. (Details - 1: Failed to get connection to session: Did not receive a reply. hey guys don't bash on forum, submit bug reports on http://bugs.archlinux.org
Give what you have. To someone, it may be better than you dare to think.

My personal solution was to rename (I actually removed it) ~/.local directory. Now everything is fine.

Related bugreport with workaround: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/11812
Description:
Someboy put gconf 2.24 in the [extra] Repo which breaks down GNOME 2.22.
So please move whole GNOME 2.24 to [extra] or remove gconf 2.24 and downgrade to gconf 2.22 again.
Workarround at the moment:
Get the old gconf 2.22 package from an outdated mirror.
`wget ftp://ftp.gigabit.nu/extra/os/i686/gcon … pkg.tar.gz && pacman -U gconf-2.22.0-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz`

Was someone bashing?
I think many times problems aren't actually bug related even though they may seem like a bug. Wouldn't it be better to add input in the forums and get others input, instead of zooming over to the bug report page? In which case I might still be scratching my head for work arounds
Anyway, you guys helped me get my laptop issues sorted out. : )

How could be possible that this solution works!?
And more important, how could be possible that I've also upgraded my laptop and I didn't have the same problem?

I'm following this thread since my pidgin still refuses to start after upgrade. I tried downgrading to gconf 2.22 and reboot; it didn't help.
When I start pidgin from a terminal I get:
$ pidgin
Bus error
hal and dbus seem to run fine. What should I check? Googling around didn't give me hints.

Me too. Maybe could be a question on how up-to-date is the mirror you use? Mine is ftp.nluug.nl...

I'm having the same problem, tried renaming the ~/.local directory which did not solve the issue. I have not reverted to previous packages yet. Is there another solution to this? The previous gconf package was not found on the mirror listed above (wget ftp://ftp.gigabit.nu/extra/os/i686/gcon … pkg.tar.gz && pacman -U gconf-2.22.0-1-i686.pkg.tar.gz).

Here is another problem after these updates: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57468
I'm not sure if it's directly related, but the fixes mentioned here do not help

Just thought I'd post the solution for me in hopes that it may help someone else.
Somehow shared-mime-info got removed so I reinstalled it:
pacman -Sy shared-mime-info
issue resolved!
