If you are talking about a beep ie,
echo -e "a"
you can remove that module by doing
# modprobe -r pcspkr
add that module to MOD_BLACKLIST in /etc/rc.conf to disable loading during boot.

yeah this was so annoying. imagine sitting in the library trying to find out how to turn it off and its beeping here and there while you try .. :?
maybe it should be turned off by default?

Playing thread archeology, eh?
Well, to answer your unasked question: there's a new PC speaker driver in the new kernel version. Just blacklist the snd-pcsp module in addition to pcspkr, and blissful silence will return. If you don't know how to do that, just make your MODULES line in /etc/rc.conf look something like this:
MODULES=(!pcspkr !snd-pcsp)
Off by default is a bit drastic. It would be too far from vanilla and too different from the defaults in other distros. Maybe adding instructions to disable the speaker to the Beginner's Guide or FAQ would be a good middle ground.
