Googling for multimedia stuff I came across the phonon-vlc-mplayer project
It's a young project by troktoff and lukas durfina which aims to bring a vlc and mplayer backend to phonon

Some good news for everyone, in particular those who use OSS4 (xine backend doesn't work, and some people find gstreamer unstable)
