As a result of this thread http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=37284 and in my quest to learn some python, I adapted the script for adesklets.  Here is a screen shot http://adesklets.sourceforge.net/images … screen.jpg.  It is listed on the adesklets site http://adesklets.sourceforge.net/desklets.html

From the README File : Pacmansentry will list according to your preference settings
Arch Linux packages available for update.  For this to work, it is best to set a cron job
for pacman -Sy.  Available packages will be listed in decreasing order of importance.

23 Oct 2008 Version 0.0.6. available.  Single package can be installed by right clicking the desklet and selecting the desired package.  Normal user must have privilege to sudo pacman -S...

Looks nice, looked at the screenshot and code. Wish we had a python API for libALPM...Anyways... great applet.

Thanks ibendiben and sabooky.  I wish I knew something about libALPM.  Docs look scarce.
