The kde-common package only contained the kdm rc.d script, so that wasn't much for one package.
So the kdm rc.d script was moved to kdebase-workspace package, and kde-common was removed.

There is more than one NVidia card, personally I have a GeForce4 MX 4000 AGP 8x which needs the legacy driver nvidia-96xx 96.43.05-4 .
I upgraded to KDE 4.1 yesterday, and it works, but without the desktop effects.
My card seems not powerful enough for these, but it's not a problem for me.
Maybe with some tweaks, the effects could work with this card. But I don't feel like making several tests, I think I can live without the desktop effects, I don't really need them presently.

Apart from that, KDE 4.1 works on my machine, with this NVidia card and the legacy proprietary driver.

As with KDE 3.5, I added in /usr/share/config/kdm/kdmrc

[X-:*-Core]
...
TerminateServer=true

to prevent crashes at logout, but it was already an issue in KDE 3.5 with the nvidia driver.

The panel is somewhat different from the previous one, I think it should become better with future releases. But I got a satisfying look to my taste. The black background is not what I prefer, but after all, the colorful icons on it look nice. I miss the possibility to go to another desktop using the mouse wheel and the blinking dots on the clock, but they are not big issues.

Edit 31/07 : I didn't notice any bugs but I am somewhat a basic user of the WM.
Replace by : To this time, I noticed the bug with the Add Widgets function of the panel, ie the blanking list and the workaround to re-size the window; the function works though.

I think things will improve in the future and I prefer to use what is current in terms of updates and security patches.

@Bralkein: Thanks you so much, this was something I didn't know, even though I have used Linux/X11 for years.... you really helped me out there. Framerate jumped a good bit too, and the slowdowns from the rest of my system (I think it has been the new "and improved" kwin ;-) ) have subsided too. I am really grateful for this!

Try:
kquitapp plasma && plasma
This restarts Plasma, and your configuration gets saved.

I like the look of KDE4 and i may try it again soon but when i tried it a few weeks ago things kept crashing Plasma Konqueror and something else. If it has been updated since about 4 weeks ago ill chuck it back on and give it a whirl.

For those wanting a bit more... I'll recommend KDEmod4 since they backported some nice features from KDE 4.1.2 SVN... Two of note are the ability to set a folderview as the desktop (iconic desktop is back), and some new features for the panel, including auto-hide...

Oh, and they ported an updated (but still needs some work...) task manager that you can adjust the amount of rows and columns...

I never liked KDE. It is not that slow or anything, I just don't like it. I also don't like cats. They are both complicated creatures, too complicated for their own good.

Openbox is better for me. Still, from time to time I feel an itch to try KDE again, it is like a stray cat: first it's sweet and fun but gradually becomes more and more sly and also brings fleas; it turns my itch to try to a real itch. I have perfectly tame goldfish, she (maybe a he, how can I tell?) never jumps on my bed in the dead of the morning, or brings fleas depended on her fur.

4.1 is bit unstable, and there are features missing. KDE 4.2-SVN looks much better, it's faster than 4.1 and the apps look more polished. I'm using Kdemod3 and I'm not planning to switch to KDE4 untill it will be able to offer needed features and in a stable way
