No sound with kernel 2.6.27

After installing kernel 2.6.27 sound stopped working on my PC. Going back to 2.6.26 fixes it. It is a really strange problem, since music programs crashed as soon as I tried to play anything (tried mpd, audacious). Also, "cat /dev/urandom > /dev/dsp" gave me white noise, but it came like from "inside" my computer rather than my speakers. I have an integrated intel card (ICH5). If anyone else has this problem I'll report a bug.

Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27

I have a similar problem with 2.6.27. My Logitech USB headset stops working with Teamspeak. I didn't try playing sound through the headset, but Teamspeak would automatically disable it when I connected, so I assumed it was fubared. My mceusb2 IR reciever caused a segfault while booting too.
All in all 2.6.27 was quite the screwup for me.

Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27

With 2.6.27 I also have no sound (Audigy 2 ZS, nForce2 motherboard). I've found out that the snd-pcsp module is problematic. Blacklisting it with /etc/rc.conf and restarting system works for me. In kernel config, responsible for the trouble is CONFIG_SND_PCSP, which in 2.6.26 "is not set", rather than being compiled as module.

Same problem. However blacklisting snd-pcsp worked for me.

Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27

2.6.27 was first kernel I build from outside ABS system. I built the alsa and modules into the kernel, and removes the module entries from rc.conf, worked superbly here even though I use Echo mia

Great, disabling snd-pcsp fixed my problems too.

I'm also having problems with mceusb2 receiver on my system.  FYI -- I filed a bug report for this: http://bugs.archlinux.org/task/11699.  Meanwhile, one solution to this problem is to manually upgrade lirc package to version 0.8.4pre2.

EDIT: This problem should be fixed with the lirc 0.8.3-3 package that just got uploaded to [testing].

Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27

I have the same problem with kernel and sound, but the difference is that I don't have this module in my rc.conf file..
It's loading itself anyway...

Is it compiled into kernel, or what am I missing? roll

I have motherboard ASUS P4B533 with onboard sound card C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (detected as pci device)

Thnx for help.

Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27

I have had the same problem as the most here with this funny project named "snd-pcsp" and with the informations from http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-kern … 00011.html i got my sound back as under 2.6.26 without blacklisting "snd-pcsp". My advantage was that i have had before a file in /etc/modprobe.d for giving some options to my sound modul and i change the content to this:

/etc/modprobe.d/sound:

# Old first line: options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig
options snd-hda-intel model=6stack-dig enable=1 index=0
options snd-pcsp enable=1 index=2
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

Note: The option "model=6stack-dig" is optional and works for my hardware equipment.

Just add !snd-pcsp to the MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf

Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27

prometej, you're welcome. By the way, what's your sig supposed to say? It looks something like "use but so that you won't abuse," but it doesn't sound grammatically correct. The word ne in a purpose clause has to be followed by a subjunctive. Abutere can mean "abuse" (imperative) or "you will abuse" (indicative), but since it's a deponent verb, abutor doesn't have a future active subjunctive form. Perhaps you're trying to say the Latin for "use but do not abuse."? If so, it would be Utere sed noli abuti.

$traight-$hoota, I have no clue what the problem is if alsamixer works properly (it didn't for me before I blacklisted snd-pcsp), but check to make sure the volume isn't muted or at zero. smile

Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27

APPEARS TO BE SOLVED see end of post

I have a chaintech av710 soundcard which uses the snd_ice1724 module. After upgrading to 2.7.27 I have no sound... The "blacklist snd-pcsp" fix didn't work for me (that module didn't get loaded anyway).

Things I have tried:

* Blacklist snd-pcsp
* Delete /etc/asound.state and reboot
* Add pci=nomsi to kernel command line and reboot
* Fiddle with controls in alsa-mixer and xfce4-mixer
* Stop alsa and try playing
* Install alsa-tools to get envy24control program, but that didn't load because it expects ice1714 and not ice1724

Funny thing is that now I have no sound at all, except for the little clicks and pops when various sound modules come online. However, after upgrading and rebooting for the first time, I could hear a TINY bit of sound, ie the volume was extremely low.

Think I should file a bug report?

UPDATE

At some point I accidentally removed alsa-utils. With alsa stopped, I unloaded the snd_ice1724 module, then loaded it again with modprobe. The sound worked after I adjusted the "front" level, which was not previously neccesary. This isn't really a fix though because I had to get rid of ALSA...

UPDATE 2

I performed roughly these steps:

{as my user}
rm ~/.config/xfce4/mcs_settings/sound.xml [i think it was called sound.xml]

{as root}
/etc/rc.d/mpd stop
/etc/rc.d/alsa stop
rm /etc/asound.state
rmmod snd_ice1724
modprobe snd_ice1724
/etc/rc.d/alsa start
/etc/rc.d/mpd start

Then started alsamixer to adjust the controls.... And I have sound again. Rebooted, and mpd started playing automatically like it should.

In short I deleted all the sound configuration, I don't know exactly what did it. I think something has changed though because before it was not neccesary to adjust the "front" level to hear anything.

Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27

I have a strange sound issue after the kernel update.  The sound from my speakers works fine, but whenever I plug in headphones in my headphone jack, there is no sound.  Anyone else have a similar problem?

Thanks!

dsr.. This is probably offtopic, but..
Maybe you are right, I honestly don't recall details of Latin grammar.. it's something that i've rememberd from my latin sessions in high school, and that was 12 years ago :-) What I know 'Utere sed ne abutere' means it exactly what you wrote 'use but don't abuse' (something is lost in translation from croatian, but it's mostly the same thing)
If my teacher was wrong, then I'm also wrong.. I didn't think of it this way.. Now you maid me think of it again.. bump :-)
If it bothers you I will remove it.. no big deal.
It's a good thing I didn't forget english.. :-)

Best regards..

Haha, no it doesn't bother me. I was just curious as to what meaning you were trying to convey in the signature. I am currently taking Latin in high school, so I haven't had the 12 years to forget. tongue Although your English is excellent, so your memory can't be too bad...

Re: No sound with kernel 2.6.27

I seem to be having the exact same issue with NO sound using the latest kernel 2.27.1 and the 2008.10 package.

I have the drivers setup and run alsamixer and unmute the master but the pc speaker volume will not move past 00! I know its not a hw issue since it was working fine with the last kernel using 2008.6. I also tried commenting out the !snd-pcsp in my MODULES array in /etc/rc.conf

I tried alsconfig but nothing plays when i play any sound file??

It sounds like you have the same problem as us. Don't comment out !snd-pcsp. You want to blacklist snd-pcsp by prefixing it with a '!', but if you comment it out, it won't get blacklisted. I'm not sure if that's what you meant, but if so, that's probably your problem. If you did blacklist it without commenting it out, perhaps you never rebooted to test whether or not it worked?
