What a huge pain in the ass this is. I can't even find the US dictionary on their extensions site. Have any of you guys done this?

Hi Synthead,
The US dictionary is here: /opt/openoffice/share/extension/install/dict-en.oxt. Use the extension manager in OO to install it (it's in one of the menus).

Thanks. I'm halfway through writing a school paper and realized the spell checker wasn't working anymore after updating to OpenOffice 3 awhile back and that the openoffice-spell-en package doesn't even exist anymore in the repositories. Are extensions new in OO3 and this is how it'll be from here on out? I'm quite pissed that I have to interrupt writing my paper to deal with a central, rudimentary word processor feature senselessly not working anymore.

Actually I think the idea of having extensions working the way it does in Firefox is pretty good. That the user doesn't get any hint about where to look in the system is unfortunate though. Still some of the extensions, like importing pdf-files for editing, are really useful, and the procedure to install them trough the extension manager is easy.

pacman gives a post-upgrade message about extensions and the location of the preinstalled dictionaries

I'm sorry that I didn't explain myself better. The "unfortunate part" wasn't directed at Arch since pacman gives the necessary information. I just thought that it would have been smoother if OpenOffice and its extension manager gave some hints about where to look.
