Hello, I am running Arch linux on an Asus laptop, model M50VM-A1. Things have been tricky, but so far I've figured them out. However, I am stumped when it comes to getting the audio to work. I've been following this thread as a reference: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=53384 Diaz has an M51vr, which I'd hoped was close enough to my model, but no go. I should note that I had to install the alsa-driver-1.0.18rc1 because the version 1.0.17 wasn't compiling for me. Alsamixer seems to recognize the card, and so does KDE, but I can't get any sound output. The model number given by aplay -l is [ALC663]. Below I have the output from aadebug. If you need more info please let me know. Finally, you should know that I'm using the wireless-testing kernel in order to get my wireless internet working... So I'm afraid that using all these beta or release candidate versions of things may make it hard to find the problem... I'm also using nvidia-beta from AUR too. Putting linux on cutting-edge hardware certainly isn't for the faint of heart!

I figured that huge block of /dev/snd before didn't look right... Everything else is still the same though.

Hmm... I guess it's a real stumper, then? I'm just going to be using Windows for a while, but I would appreciate any help you guys can give me. Thanks.

I just recommended this to somebody the other day, but I couldn't find the post to copy/paste my response
*) Try OSS http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/OSS which works fine for me
-or-
*) Edit /etc/modprobe.conf and add the line 'options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo'; reboot
ether works for me with my Realtek HDA in my laptop. If you want to stick with ALSA and the model=lenovo thing doesn't work, there are other models to try; google for the alsa page on hda

Hello, it has been quite a while. Things have been busy with college and all, but I'm back and trying to get this working. Now, OSS does seem to work.... to an extent, anyway. I can only get sound out of ossplay and osstest, but nothing else. No system sounds, no game sounds, nothing from JuK... Anyway, here is the output from osstest -v3:

If you use KDE with OSS4 you have to install the gstreamer backend (just install gst-plugins-bad as phonon in arch comes with both xine and gstreamer support)
Also you can recompile your kernel with Realtek HDA support in the Intel HDA Section of alsa (I didn't try it because OSS is working fine and alsa was always a mess but with all the new laptops with HDA onboard, alsa should have catch up)
The OSSv4 wiki link http://www.opensound.com/wiki/index.php … _for_OSSv4
Ah, good taste! What a dreadful thing! Taste is the enemy of creativeness.

Oh.. yeah, I forgot to respond sooner, but I found out what my problem was. It turned out that I hadn't installed all the codecs I needed. It works now... or at least it did when I tested it. I don't really use linux much because I am a gamer at heart, but I do like tinkering with it from time to time. Well, until I come back to linux again, let me thank you guys for your help. I'll be back before too long, I'm sure.
