I have a new install of arch and the latest compiz-fusion pkg. When i try to run it using fusion-icon i get many error lines like:
icon = gtk,status ............... gtkwarning: gdkdrawable-x11.c:878 drawable is not a pixmap or window .....
segmentation fault
This is running on a HP laptop (radeon mobility x600) with open source ati drivers installed....startx works and opens one window fine.
Any ideas what could be the issue. I went through all the guides and xorg config, etc...

"startx works and opens one window fine"
Confused. You mean the _default_ startx with the garish green twm window manager, etc? Or do you mean a .xinitrc configured to start Compiz Fusion by way of each separate piece (compiz, emerald, etc.)?

hehe, no just a very basic white small window in the upper left corner...thats all
# startx
I also have the latest kernel 2.27.1 using the 2008.10 build
Edit: just installed xfce4 just to get some DE working...It installed in 2-3 mins!!! Super easy to install...Not sure whats happening with compiz-fusion but xfrce4 is pretty lightweight and quick...
Now on this xfce4 desktop i do see a CompizConfigSettings Manager when right clicking on the desktop.

Update: Since i have installed xfce4 and have it running pretty good, i can now start fusion-icon from a terminal window within xfce4 and it seems like compiz-fusion starts. Hoever its extremely extremely SLOW!! Alt-tab takes 10 seconds to respond and still does not completely respond! Not sure whats going on with that, but i rebooted and using ONLY xfce4 now and its pretty quick....I know this laptop does not have a great video card, but any suggestions on if this is the problem or if its still something else??

Try turning off all effects in CCSM, and then add them back one at a time.
Also, if you Google your question, you'll find lots of potential fixes.
Are you sure you have the latest 3D-accelerated video drivers?
