smartd errors CurrentPendingSector & OfflineUncorrectableSector

I got two e-mails from smartd when I restarted it a little while ago

This email was generated by the smartd daemon running on:

  host name: the-library
 DNS domain: [Unknown]
 NIS domain: (none)

The following warning/error was logged by the smartd daemon:

Device: /dev/sdb, 4294967295 Currently unreadable (pending) sectors

For details see host's SYSLOG (default: /var/log/messages).

You can also use the smartctl utility for further investigation.
No additional email messages about this problem will be sent.

However the drive passes a short self-test without error, and from the log it appears it passed the long self-tests run weekly as well. Also mdadm doesn't report the drive as failed (it is part of a RAID5). There appears to be nothing wrong with the drive beyond those two e-mails from smartd.

The drive is a 500GB seagate sata drive. How can there be 4294967295 offline sectors and it still seem to work fine?

Offline
