xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

Howdy.  Hopefully someone will be able to point me in the right direction.  I have two computers with identical hardware that I am doing fresh FTP builds with.  So far they have only the base applications along with xorg and xfce4 groups.

When I start xfce4 the background does not draw correctly during startup but is okay once xfce4 finishes loading.  The major problem is with windows.  I then open up term and all I see is the title bar the rest of the window does not draw and I see the desktop underneath.  If I move the window it will not redraw itself and sorta disappears.

This problem exists for me under any desktop environment I choose.  I have tried XFree86, xorg, fluxbox, xfce4 and gnome all have exhibit these issues.  Before the rebuild of these two computers I was using the previous package of xorg and xfce4 with no problems.

My video adapter is an intel i810 and I am using the kernel26 package.  I configured xorg using xorgconfig and I haven't noticed anything surprising the in the xorg.conf file.

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

how did you configured X (/etc/X11/xorg.conf|XF86Config)

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

I just finished the installs and is current as of today.  I use the "current" repo.

The xorg package is xorg 11R6.8.0-3 which I configure using

/usr/X11R6/bin/xorgconfig

My video card is an on-board Intel i810.  I am also using the default 26 version of the arch kernel package "kernel26".

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

you can run "xdpyinfo" in a terminal to check if something is running in wrong settings.

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

xerxes2, I am unable to run that command from a terminal.  The xterm window appears but I do not receive a command prompt nor am I able to type anything.  All I get is an outline of the window with the underlying desktop image inside.

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

ok,
are you running the same driver(listed in xorg.conf) as with the previous working version?

There was one other guy awhile back with this chip that flashed his bios and then it worked but if yours was working with the previous version of xorg that shouldn't be needed for you.

hope you get it to work.. big_smile

Edit: Your driver is in the "Device" section.

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

I don't have my previous xorg.conf file to verify all the settings but "i810" is listed as one of the devices.  I also just upgraded xorg the latest 6.8.1 package and I am still having the same problem.

Could it be an issue with the gtk2 package?  I honestly don't know which packages do what when it comes to desktop environments.

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

I'm running arch as of today and GTK works here.
could there be something wrong with your /etc/fstab?
here is the first half of mine

none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts defaults 0 0
none /dev/shm tmpfs defaults 0 0
tmpfs /tmp tmpfs defaults 0 0
#sysfs /sys sysfs defaults 0 0
usbfs /proc/bus/usb usbfs defaults 0 0

I think you need the /dev/pts line to get a shell prompt.

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

Sorry, I am able to get a command prompt when I first startup.  But I am unable to run xdpyinfo from my xfce environment.  When I run it from the console I get an error that it is 'unable to open display"".'

I also checked my fstab file and devpts is listed.

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

Sorry to revive topic but anybody else have any ideas?  I tried building a custom kernel to see if that made a difference but still no luck.

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

You can try searching through xorg mailing list. Maybe someone has the same issues with the Intel graphic card:

http://freedesktop.org/pipermail/xorg/

You can also try enabling/disabling xcompmgr or upgrading your card's drivers. I've heard somewhere that the support for Intel cards is rather poor in the latest xorg releases but you may give it a try or buy nvidia wink  big_smile

Re: xorg with xfce4 rendering issue

Yippie  big_smile  I was able to get ahold of the old xorg package xorg-6.7.0-1 and my desktop works fine!!!

I don't mind using the older version of xorg but I am concerned why my it doesn't work with the newer package.

Anyways thanks to all who helped me.  It was very much appreciated!
