Kernel 2.6.27 - strange HDD sound when reading [solved]

Hi, today i update to new kernel 2.6.27.4-1 and then my HDD was making strange noises when playing an mp3 file or avi video etc.
Now i rolled back to my compiled 2.6.26.5 which runs without those sounds (but the only change is config, i compiled modules into kernel).
If i remember correctly i had no problems with 2.6.27.1-1....

I am using JFS filesystem on root and home partitions. I tried fsck.jfs but the problem stayed.
For both kernels 2.6.27.1-1 and 2.6.27.4-1 I used the same HOOKS and MODULES in mkinitcpio:
MODULES="pata_sis ata_generic scsi_mod"
HOOKS="base udev autodetect pata scsi sata keymap filesystems"

Here are some infos about my HDD:

sudo hdparm -t -T /dev/sda
/dev/sda:

 Timing buffered disk reads: 120 MB in 3.00 seconds = 39.95 MB/sec

Hmm those Old_age and Pre-fail aren't good, are they?

I have no problem with using "1 month outdated kernel", however I am interested if anyone else noticed the same thing?

hard drives making strange noises usually is cause for concern (as usually thats a sign that its failing)

Either that or it's trying to play sounds/music from the pc speaker, try disabling the pc speaker

sudo rmmod snd_pcsp

see http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=57241

you are probably right willy, because i compile kernel without this module, however the default kernel has it.
and i used !pcspkr before, and this has probably changed since you are saying disable snd_pcsp
...glad to hear that pc speaker was doing that strange sound smile
thank you, marking this thread as solved...
