[SOLVED]need some help with alsaconf and usb soundcard

i have an eee 901 with built-in intel-hda soundcard and creative e-mu 0202.
when i run alsaconf it only finds built-in intel-hda soundcard
but cat /proc/asound/cards gives me
0 [Intel          ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel
                      HDA Intel at 0xf7eb8000 irq 16
1 [USB            ]: USB-Audio - E-MU 0202 | USB
                      E-MU Systems, Inc. E-MU 0202 | USB at usb-0000:00:1d.7-2, high speed
i want to play sound with external card when it's plugged, and with internal otherwise
(i don't want to have to carry usb-box everywhere)

The solution I described there is convoluted and specific to my hardware and usage, but maybe it'll give you some ideas.
