I'm not a complete Linux newbie, but I am new to Arch. My laptop currently has Crunchbang installed, but "The Arch Way" intrigues me. Since this is my primary computer -for home use only, nothing "mission critical"- I would like to get an idea of how long an average install would take so I can plan my time accordingly. I am currently reading the Beginners Guide and am planning on doing the http/ftp install. What I want is an openbox WM with full multi-media support.
Can I get some ideas as to how long it has taken people to install their systems? I'm connected via cable modem with a 1.8 GHz Intel CPU and 2GB RAM.
Thanks,
Kent

Less than 30 mins, but it depends on how much you wanna install

What you're looking to install looks pretty light, so it shouldn't take more than a half hour or so.

This is also good suggested reading, and will walk you through the installation process.

If it's your first time installing Arch, I'd say you should set aside an hour or two to be on the safe side. If you were a pro, I'd set aside maybe 20 or 30 minutes assuming everything went smoothly. Downloading and installing packages itself won't take a real long time, but you can expect to spend more time getting aquainted with the system.
I hope that answers it, sorry for being so general, but it really does mostly depend on you and how comfortable you are with the system.
The suggestion box only accepts patches.

I've made my first installation almost a week ago, it took 2 or 3 hours to feel OK as neotuli wrote.

Thanks for all the quick replies. It doesn't sound like it will take that long. I was half-way expecting to see 6-8 hour posting. Very glad I didn't
With even a 2 to 3 hour time table, it looks like I can plan on an install this weekend.
Thanks again,
Kent

I installed Archlinux two days ago for the first time.
With the installation CD it took about 20-30 minutes to be installed.
Then I rebooted and installed the full gnome desktop, ATI drivers and Openoffice 3.0. 90% of the time spent in installing these components is the download time
Then I configured the system to manage battery powers, frequency scaling and other stuff.
The installation took about 3 hours. It was done following the official wiki's.
All was pretty straightforward.
I really like Arch, my laptop has really increased its performances.
