GMAIL and IMAP question (Not the usual question!!)

The usual question is why deleting mail doesn't work right with IMAP.

My question is about spam. If I use my mail-client to move an email from my gmail inbox to the gmail spam box, will google "learn" that this is spam the same way it does when you are using gmail in a broswer and click "mark as spam"?
