system freeze

Hi there,

I've been using linux for a couple of years now, starting with gentoo, then ubuntu and now i like archlinux a lot!
But I have an (for me) unresolvable issue here.

I try to describe what I have observed and tried so far:
So the issue is, that there are random system freezes (after couple of minutes up to one or two hours). The screen just freezes as well as mouse and keyboard, the only thing is to hold the power button to reboot.
There is no specific time when the system freezes, no specific program.
I tried kde, gnome and fluxbox. All of them freeze after some time.
In some posts i read, that this could have something to do with my nvidia card.
So I used X without nvidia driver, still the same result.
System logs do not report anything, CPU and GPU are both on frequency scaling and were low.

I have a ASUS U6S, here is the spec:
http://www.asus.com/products.aspx?l1=5& … odelmenu=2
The one with the T8300

I already used Vista and Ubuntu for a long time without any freeze. Currently I use Vista on parallel as well, no freezes.

I use kernel 2.6.27 since some days now and the issue was already with 2.6.26.

If there is any info that i could post, that could help, please let me know.

I would be so grateful if anyone could help me or point me the direction.
I would hate to go back to ubuntu...

Cheers
LaZZlo

Re: system freeze

difference between ur arch and ubuntu u installed can be:
1. different kernel patching
2. different binary optimization.. I am not sure if the Arch 686 optimization could have something to do with that...
3. different set of kernel modules loaded on each installation..

finding which is at fault will be hard.. I would start by looking at the BIOS or kernel modules, starting with defaults and working ur way with safer settings, to find which is causing this.

Re: system freeze

Something could be segfaulting here...looks like your laptop has face recognition.  Maybe that or some other piece of hardware is conflicting with the kernel.

Re: system freeze

That was it! I put a sticker over my webcam and now everythings fine!
Great!!

No just kidding...

I did what daf666 suggested and it is definitely my wireless card. I have one with the abg/n standard and I use the iwl4965 module.
Last thing I did was just use the hardware switch to deactivate the wireless stuff and now the system was running over night without a freeze.

Thanks for the advices so far!

Cheers

Re: system freeze

I now did what was suggested on WIKI: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Del … less_Setup

I downgraded the firmware.
Unfortunately now the wlan doesn't work anymore. I have the wlan0 but it says its powered down.
