I found a strange thing. When I finished the installation and run pacman -Syu to update the system. Then don't restart the machine and go on install other packages, such as pacman -S xorg, gnome or whatever. I found the /etc/inittab file has been changed to inittab.pacsav. When I restart the PC after all packages installed, I got the error message of "No inittab such file or directory" When I recovered from the CD to change inittab.pacsav to inittab. It can find this file, however, the new error message display "rc.sysinit No such file or directory". I have tested it twice on the vmware. It's same issue. Could you some one kindly help this?
Thanks a lot.

Did you for some reason uninstall initscripts?
Offline
Hi, I think I didn' t run any uninstall initscripts. Just update the system and install some softwares.

The pacsave file indicates that youremoved initscripts at some stage. During your update, did you answer yes to any pacman queries?
Offline
oh~~~ yes, I answered yes during the update. I don't remeber the details. But it has three times to answer "Y".

It all seems a bit strange, but if you could post exactly what you get asked during the update it would be very helpful. What install CD are you using?

I use Archlinux-i686-2007.08-2.core to install. I tested again and got this message when I install gnome xfce4 gdm... Please check it. I saw the Remove initscripts... It only can answer "yes" then install the packages.

:: udev conflicts with initscripts. Remove initscripts? [Y/n]
That tells me you had an old version of initscripts installed. Are you sure you did a "pacman -Syu" before you started installing everything else. initscripts should have been updated to a version compatible with udev.
Offline
Yes, I am sure I do "pacman -Syu" first, then pacman -S xorg, pacman -S gnome xfce4 gdm.
Offline
try pacman -Syyu, then re-install initscripts. Double check you have a good mirror.

Thanks a lot. I will follow your suggestion.

My guess is that the "pacman -Syu" fails. Probably due to this: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=56431

Thanks a lot Allan. You are right, it's the problem of symbolic link. It's all right when I move the /usr/lib/klibc/include/asm. And update system and install software have no any errors. Hightly appreciated your great help.
