Hi, since I experimented with the sound of the MB (nForce2 MCP not Soundstorm) I cannot get a clear sound while listening music. There are plenty of noise and cracks.
I went back to the Sound Blaster Live! and now I got a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS, but the problem persists. However Rhythmbox works fine. What can be the problem?
Mmmm, sometimes it seems to me that there is saturation when using Rhythmbox, but I cannot say for sure...

me too.
the problem started about 2-3 days ago and i have no idea

what output plugin do you use in xmms?
rhythmbox uses, i think, esd - xmms also have esound output
what kernel? (if(2.4)what alsa version?)
The impossible missions are the only ones which succeed.

I use alsa for xmms. The kernel is "Linux version 2.6.8.1 (root@earth) (gcc version 3.4.1)".
Both rhythmbox and xmms seem to me to saturate at high frequencies and the quality of the sound is kind of harsh. It should not happen with and Audigy 2 ZS (I hope ).
In W2k Doom III, music & sounds play fine, but I will test RealPlayer & Creative MediaSource today to discard hardware problems, but it happened with the Live! as well.
edit:
It happens more in downloaded mp3, but I it also happens in ripped ones although not so hard. I have recently switched to my old speakers Cambridge 4.1 to play Doom III properly (after going back to the Sb Live! from the AC97 codec and before installing th Audigy). Could it have something to do with the problem perhaps?
edit:
Name : alsa-lib
Version : 1.0.6-1
I do not use alsa-driver since the kernel 2.6 do not requires it.

W2k works perfect.

Well, maybe is a matter of keeping the slides at medium level so as not to saturate the software and using the external amplifier's volume control...
