I tried to update this evening and received these messages.
1. gtk2 conflicts with gail
2. libdvdpsi conflicts with libdvdpsi4
3. error: failed to prepare transaction (could not satisfy dependencies)
4. ::ipw3945: requires kernel26<2.6.27
I tried to update just the kernel, but received this message.
1. error: 'kernel' cannot open package
any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

I believe ipw3945 is officially deprecated, which means you'll need to remove it and use iwl3945 instead before you upgrade the kernel. Check out the networking wiki article for full details. Not sure about the other conflicts though.

1. you will get asked to replace gail with gtk2. Say yes.
2. you will get asked to replace libdvbpis4 with libdvbpsi. Say yes.
4. As thayer said, you need to switch to iwl3945.

I'm not sure why ipw3945 is on my system...I don't have or use wifi?
Can i use pacman to remove ipw3945 and then add iwl3945?

If you don't use wifi, then just pacman -R the package.
