Remembering term and program positions upon startup

HAY

I currently have the awesome wm installed along with other apps like bitlbee and rtorrent amongst others.  When I reboot the machine, I'd like to have these same apps start automatically and in the same positions I had them last time.  I have a feeling this kind of thing can be accomplished through the awesome wm config file. 

What have you done personally to accomplish this similar feat?

Did a little more sleuthing and found that you can do this with the app called screen.  So I'll give that a shot.
