hello,
i upgraded the system yesterday and got the latest xorg. i tried to startx but it got lots of errors: keyboard, mouse, ati radeon. so because i used my old xfree86config i ran xorgconfig to make a new. but i dont get it to work. it seems to hate my radeon 9200 se.
it does not care if i use the ati, radeon or simple standard vga driver. i startx and the screen gets and stays black. i dont know a hotkey to quit that so i have to reboot. i tried it now more than 10 times. btw i did not include the ati drivers in my kernel because i dont need 3d. but before the update everything was fine. i think xorg hates ati and well if nobody helps me i will buy a standard nvidia fx5200 card but i have no money! sick!!!

roll back to old xorg if you still have it ,at the very least you will be able to use system till you figure out what is wrong ;-)

well not a bad idea. and i have the old package! most times i delete them.
very good i tried now to downgrade but i dont know how. i set a link in my pacman.conf to /var/cache/pacman/pkg but it does not work. i also tried pacman -S xorg11R6.7.0-1 - no luck.

you can do ctrl+alt+backspace to quit X and get back to the terminal/console when the screen goes black so you don't have to reboot every time.

ame please post a snippet of /var/log/Xorg.0.log (tail -n 20)

to show you my log i will have to upgrade again. i searched for an .old log but they all depend on the xorg6.7. btw when i tried to run the xserver the screen stayed blank and no log was written. before when i tried xor6.8 with my old xfreeconfig it said that it cannot initialize the radeon.
do you think i shell upgrade again, print the log and downgrade again?

i tried now to downgrade but i dont know how.
It's as simple as pacman -Uf yourparh/yourpackage

I think you'd better forget it. There are many bugs that haven't been fixed, take a look if you have time.

It's simpler: pacman -U yourpath/yourpackage . You only need the -f if there are file conflicts during the upgrade (and most of the time there won't be).

alright alright,
if you read the whole thread you ll see that i did the downgrade very well.
my problem is that the system will not accept my radeon with xorg6.8 and i wonder why nobody has got the same problem. i m not the only radeon user, am i?
so possibly there is someone getting the same errors?

In fact, pressing CTRL+ALT+F1 can bring you to terminal, but you (and I) must have not seen any errors but: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) !
And, I checked the LOG file, no errors found!
Somebody help us?!

I just had this problem after a fresh install. When I ran the config script for Xorg, I just hit enter for my mouse and chose /dev/mouse. But I didn't have the symlink set up yet to point to my actual mouse device. Apparently this caused it to sit at a black screen and I couldn't ctrl+alt+backspace either.
Edit: I believe this wiki entry, was the error I had.
It mentions in the Please note section:
Usually the server refuses to start if there is no core pointer device. You can change this by adding the line:
Option "AllowMouseOpenFail" "1"
to the ServerFlags section of your xorg.conf.
Guess I won't bother submitting a bug report

I have an error similar to ame's one. When I startx xorg6.8 it completely freezes, but i get no blank screen, the pointer transforms into an square ugly shape.
I can start xorg if i disable glx or if i disable dri (or both of them), but then i have no 3d accel... but I play no games, so i don't care too much for it.
I have an Intel 852GM/855GM graphic card.

completely freezed means no answer from keyboard or mouse, no ctrl + alt + XXX possible (including ctrl + alt + del)

I also had the same Black Screen syndrome when I upgraded. It turned out that I was listing my serial mouse as ttys0 instead of ttyS0 - I made the change - made sure that xorg.conf listed Keyboard as kbd saved and it fired right up...:)

Thanks for that post freakyc - I had a similar problem, and it sorted it out enough for me to feel convinced that Xorg worked.
I couldn't get either my touchpad or serial mouse to work, until I pacmaned udev, and then changed the mouse entry to read
Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
At which point both of them started working - hurrah.
