I think this started after the last kernel upgrade (but I'm not positive). All I know is in the last week, my machine will randomly snap to a black screen from whence there is no return. It's not off, just black. I can't exit X and get to my command prompt or anything, I just have to do a hard restart and hope I didn't lose too much work (hooray for auto-recovery).
Actually, auto-recovery is another odd thing. After I restart once things go black, MPD will be right back where it was when I started up LAST time, and OpenOffice recovers my document in the same place it was the last time I started, nothing new that happened during the session that crashed.
Is there a log that I can check to report more details?
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.

Bump and a bit more info: sometimes I -do- go back to the command line, as though I got randomly logged out. It seems to happen once in a while when I sign in and right-click to bring up the OB menu. There's no real pattern as to which one I get, although it SEEMS like if it happens within about 20 seconds of starting X it'll just be X going off, but if I'm in for a while it'll go to pure black.
And in the midst of such perfection,
I can't help but feel diseased.

My x turns black too, but it returns to normal after a few seconds.
I'm using nvidia, didn't test any other drivers.

I had this a while ago too.
I removed xorg-server from /var/cache/pacman/pkg, reinstalled it and it was over.
I hope this helps
