KDE sound doesn't work?

After started KDE, the following error dialog poped up:

Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing the sound driver:
device: default can't be opened for playback (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.

The error message also appear when startx (i put startkde on the ~/.xinitrc):

ALSA lib pcm_hw.c :1155:(snd_pcm_hw_open) open /dev/snd/pcmC0D0p failed: not such file or directory
....
kmix: ERROR: snd_ctl_open err=no such file or directory

But using mplayer to play files have sounds but sounds is not good..

Re: KDE sound doesn't work?

does it work as root?
then it's a permission problem
you use alsa?
you use udev?

try to load snd_pcm_oss in rc.cof's module list
