Extremely odd GDM Issues

I am having this really annoying problem with GDM that I can't fix.  If I have gdm set to start as a daemon or on starting init 5 in the inittab, it tries to start but I just end up with a blank screen and I cant get to my virtual consoles at all. Ctrl+Alt+Backspace does nothing. I have to hold to power button down and kill the machine. So... now heres the weird thing... if I boot into run level 3 (where gdm doesn't and isn't expected to start here) and then log in and manually start it with '/etc/rc.d/gdm start' everything works fine! Its sooo freaking annoying... has anyone ever had this error or know how I can fix it?

I also noticed if I changed my driver in xorg.conf from 'fglrx' to 'vesa' then gdm starts with no problems. But... vesa is no fun hmm.

Re: Extremely odd GDM Issues

I just found that xdm is willing to start up when booting... but I would rather use gdm.
