I am required to have Sun Java JRE browser plugin on my system to interface with many of my work applications and when I try to do so from Firefox, I get the following error:
ERROR: Java is not enabled on your browser.
ASDM requires Java to be enabled or to use a Java-enabled browser.
It appears I just don't have it installed which is perfectly fine however I am only on my second day of using Arch and really am not sure what I need. I did do the following:
pacman -Syy
pacman -S jre
I still however think I installed the wrong package or am just simply missing the browser plugin for JRE to work in Firefox.
Anyone know?

If you're using x86_64, there's no browser plugin in Sun's JRE. You'll need OpenJDK that includes a browser plugin that works in most cases.

OK - is 'OpenJDK' something I can download using Arch's 'Pacman'?

Well...I'm an Arch64 user and I've found a x86_64 JRE package in my repositories. Unfortunatelly I can't make it to work. So what's the Java 64-bit status for today? I have to admint I'm a little bit confused

There has never been a 64 bit Java plug-in for Linux from Sun until OpenJDK. They had some involvement in Blackdown, but that wasn't a Sun project. And even the plug-in from OpenJDK was more GnuClassPath than Sun. There has been a JRE for years, but Sun didn't consider 64 bit to be a desktop platform.

best JRE for x86_64 by far is icedtea6, you can get it from AUR. It has worked with any java based web app I have run into yet, though that is very few.

Umm... The openjdk package in [extra] replaces that package.

i've never had java working properly in firefox with openjdk6
usually it would just try, and give the error 'applet not loaded'
but now, it give the toolbar saying 'java not installed, click here to install'
i click, and it gives the usual 'automatic install not available, do manually'
any ideas?

The mozilla plugin does not work since the last update of openjdk due to a symlink error.
To fix it, just do as root :
rm /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/gcjwebplugin.so
ln -s /usr/lib/jvm/java-1.6.0-openjdk/jre/lib/amd64/IcedTeaPlugin.so /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/IcedTeaPlugin.so
Also, please do NOT use the icedtea6 package anymore. I sent it to AUR when openjdk6 was not avaliable in the repos yet ; now it is useless and outdated, and I don't maintain it anymore.

I just installed the openjdk package in extra and now my browser plugin is broke.
The java applets is loaded fine, but it just doesn't show anything, only a plain color:
Any ideas?

See the little "block" comment over the windows? It looks like you have scripts blocked.

the plugin is broken in openjdk6-1.3.1-1.
just building/uploading -2 with the fixed plugin.

It's not blocked. The "block" comment over the window is just to let me have an easy access to block it, if I want to I'm using Adblock Plus.

If there's no 64-bit Java available, so what is this???

You'll notice that I highlighted plug-in, as well as I mentioned that there had been a JRE for years.

Now I understand. Thanks
EDIT:
Unfortunately OpenJDK doesn't work for me either When I enable Java and point in Opera's Preferences the path to the correct folder (Opera claims it is correct) nothing really changes, and after I restart my browser option "use Java" is again disabled...

I've never managed to get any Javas at all to work in 64 bit Opera. Either use another browser or a 32 bit Opera (there's most likely a package for it in AUR).

It seems we won't be waiting eternally for a 64-bit Java plugin

Finally :-P I've set up firefox32 from AUR and Java 32 bit manually downloaded and it works fine for my Runescape needs (OpenJDK has a problewm with it) but I'd rather use a native 64 bit plugin
