0.7 Progress?

What's the status of the 0.7 release? I ask because I have lost touch witht the mailing list, and don't see much action on the front page.

I'm really anticipating it, because I sorta borked my old Arch install and am excited to do a clean install with alot of the new toys out there!!!

Udev, X.org 6.8.

Also, in my dreams, I have applications that take full advantage of Reiser4, though it won't happen soon...

So, what's the status of 0.7?

well, i know bugger all about it...

BUT...

considering the current issues surrounding gcc, kde and xorg 6.8 i think it might be a little while till this all gets ironed out

As far as i understand it a release is almost just a snapshot of the packages in current - as some of these packages are in there it seems that release will be dependent on them being sorted first

I understand completely. It's more of a mental thing for me, anyway, to do a clean install with all the latest toys.

Also, just being a fan of Arch, I know how beneficial it can be to have a new release (more users, and therefore developers, hopefully)...and how detrimental t could be to have a bad release.

I must be patient.

Once the storm of breakage and upgrades passes, we'll probably throw out another beta iso first, and give the doc guys a chance to update the install guide.

I'd also kinda like to wait for 2.6.9 as well, which means more building/testing before release (whee). 2.6.8.1 wasn't too hot, imho.

Thanks for the update, apeiro. There certainly have been a load of major releases recently. Hopefully all comes together sooner rather than later, but you have to wait for quality at times.

I agree about 2.6.8.1 being not so hot...

i haven't heard any news about the kernel in a while... but when they released 2.6.8, didn't Linus say the 2.6 branch was returning to development status, and stabilizing the kernel was the job of the distro?

while i haven't had any problems myself with the latest kernel (*crosses fingers*), just hanging out here in the forums has shown me that it's been a pest for many other users. has Linus eaten his words about this issue? I hope so. Is it really a big problem to start a 2.7 branch for development, and keep 2.6 stable?

anyway, if 2.6.9 isn't stable, maybe we should discuss the possibility of putting 2.6.7 on the arch 0.7 install disc?

I'm using 2.6.9-rc2 + some patches and it's ok.

I think that better will be wait for 2.6.9 stable than downgrading to 2.6.7.

It's best to not blindly upgrade to the newest kernel if your current one works fine. That said, how to achieve that is another question. A solution is to put new kernels in testing, or not automatically upgrade them with a system update.

I don't use Arch's standard kernel, so this all doesn't really matter for me, all I can say is that I'm using rc releases most of the time and have never any problems (2.6.8-rc1 now..).

I'm currently running Linux 2.6.7-ck5. Maybe I borked the .config in my sleep, but neither 2.6.8.1 or 2.6.9-rc1 was able to mount my USB-devices. Maybe I should try to compile a new one with the same .config this kernel-image has, but heck, whats the point?

i have read it already.. but i see alot of people having no problems with xorg and kde now so thats why i asked.. Arch is kinda well not really active anymore it seems..

what do you mean not active? there are at least 100 packages upgraded every week. pacman was upgraded just the other day. besides if you upgrade regularily you already have 0.7. the 0.7 filesystem and initscript upgrades came out long ago and the beta iso was released not too long ago.

also you can take a look at the version release list to see that there is an increasing time between releases. i don't know how you guage "activity" but version releases are not it.

xorg problems started about two weeks ago and i don't know if the issues with kde are fixed yet. now with gnome 2.8 in testing there may be more to wait for too as gnome is not stable in xorg.

so when you see a new kernel and kde and gnome are swimming well with xorg then you will see 0.7 final release.

I don't like whining, I like whining about linux and getting the problem fixed.

This is why winblows is not my OS of choice, since though it gives a lot to whine about, it just can't be fixed.

Getting the problem fixed is where the real fun is
