after I've switched to awesome, my weechat started getting an "no dbus daemon" running message whenever I'm highlighted, which used to work fine with notification daemon in openbox...any ideas?

Try putting dbus-launch in your startup script. Look in /etc/xdg/openbox/autostart.sh (if you still have openbox installed) to see an example.

Yeah, what you could do is put this in .bashrc/.zshrc/whichever you use:
alias startx="dbus-launch startx"
And by the way, the newest awesome (3.1-rc1 and on, and git version) has a built-in notification library called "naughty".

oh cool, how do I tell weechat to use naughty instead?

weechat uses notification daemon ? Or do you have a plugin for that ?
Anyway, you could use the perl plugin called sound.pl, which should come bundled with weechat. There you can define custom commands to be run when someone messages and highlights you. So, you can use notify-send with that, and you have no need for d-bus

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...
