awesome

ok, so I'm trying to switch to awesome, but two main things holding me back atm.

firefox, and gnome-terminal, don't work.

Firefox does start up, but it is SO slow it is completely unusable, and at startup I also get an error about it not being able to load all my configs or something.

When I try to start gnome-terminal, I get this: terminal-app.c:1525:terminal_app_init: assertion failed: (app->default_profile_id != NULL)

Re: awesome

I haven't encounter any problem using awesome + firefox...
and avoid gnome-terminal using urxvt or xterm instead, because gnome-terminal pull many gnome dependencies which I never use.

Re: awesome

Can I suggest you sakura instead of gnome-terminal? I'm really happy with it. Try it. wink

For firefox I hadn't had such problem. I was using awesome3.0 though maybe there are some problems with awesome-git.

Re: awesome

I've got the same problem when working with awesome, it gives roughly this message:

there was an error loading or saving your configuration some of your settings may not work

unfortunately I can neither dismiss that dialog box, nor get firefox to work in a usable fashion, epiphany appears to do the same thing. I've cleared all my firefox settings, and relauched it, but to no effect.  Gone back to gnome for now, which is a shame as I wanted to try awesome (incidentally, it's an unmodified awesome config) but I can't afford to lose the time to fiddling.

Edit: Firefox does the same in twm too... so definitely a firefox problem not awesome.

Re: awesome

I run Firefox in awesome daily.  it has no problem whatsoever on my arch64.  Although I have had problems before with Gnome apps not running in other environments.  Upgrading the packages seemed to fix it eventually.  As for firefox, make sure you DO NOT answer yes to the "Firefox is not your default browser..." question and click "Never ask again."  I simply set the gnome settings to firefox and disregarded that question.

Re: awesome

If firefox keeps giving you trouble you could try another version of it that's in aur such as http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=17975

Heh, doh, I should really remember to read things like that even if it's before 7am. I just find that the spookyet version does feel faster to me so that led me to think that it might be faster to you.

Well... if that one is slow... have you tried any other of the firefox packages (like for example the default one)?

Re: awesome

I don't mean that its...annoying slow...its completely unusable slow, like, a couple minutes to load a page.

Re: awesome

Yeah that's precisely my problem... I've given up on it for the moment, although I'm thinking I might try completely removing gnome and seeing if that fixes the problem, but that's not something I particularly want to do as I do use gnome quite often.

Re: awesome

Some background information may help diagnose the problem...for starters:

How are you starting awesome?  Show us your configs (startup, awesome config, etc.)
Have you tried renaming your FF profile and starting a fresh one?  It may be an extension causing the problem, I don't know.

As others have mentioned, gnome-terminal can be heavy on dependencies.

Re: awesome

Have you tried disabling Pango by adding export MOZ_DISABLE_PANGO=1 to your ~/.bashrc?
