I am not quite a gamer myself, but my kids are getting more and more heavy on my laptop. Can you recommend a simple joystick for small kids (2-6 years old) for playing games like SMC, supertux and alike? It should of course work in linux!
When I google on the web I find gazillion of large complicated things that seem more suitable for flying A380 than for controlling mario in action.

A xbox controller? I heard they work well in Linux.

A base model logitech gamepad would be great for those games. They're cheap and are actually pretty decent gamepads too.
If you really need a joystick and not a gamepad, the base model logitech and saitek joysticks will do the job.
Otherwise, pretty much any USB game device should work. Have a look at your favourite local/online computer store and see what they have in stock.

Would any of these work with linux? How are they visible in the system? Do they require special driver or do they pretend to be a usb keyboard?

I have the one with the little analog sticks and it works fine. Quite use-able with super maryo chronicles.
