(edit: I was kinda vague in my initial post)
I did a kernel update today, and now X won't start anymore, giving me this:
(WW) intel(0): xf86BindGARTMemory: binding of gart memory with key 0 at offset 0x7xf7f000 failed (Invalid argument)
Fatal server error:
Couldn't bind memory for HW status
Downgrading to the previous kernel fixes the issue. Anyone else experiencing this? Is there a way to use the new kernel without this error? Anyone who knows what this error means and what could cause it?
Card: Mobile Intel® GMA 4500MHD

Err.. I wouldn't want to call it 'bump', but my initial post was rather vague and panicky, and by the time I changed to wording into something more coherent, it had dropped of the first few pages.
I just don't know enough to even understand the error message
What is the kernel anyway? (just kidding. Not that I really know, actually, but I'll look that up for myself )

I have exact the same issue, I am installing a Vaio VGN-BZ12XN, same video card.

Me too, Dell studio 15, same videocard. Rolling back to 2.6.27.4 is a temporary fix.

How can I downgrade the kernel to the previous version without having the package in my cache ?

Will try to use the kernel26-2.6.27.5-1-i686 kernel found here:
ftp://ftp.uni-kl.de/pub/linux/archlinux … pkg.tar.gz
Okay, that one doesn't work, trying kernel26-2.6.27.4-1-i686 now:
http://archlinux.umflint.edu/core/os/i6 … pkg.tar.gz
I can confirm kernel26-2.6.27.4-1-i686 works, the newer kernels don't.

Hmm.. oh well. Seems we'll have to hope the next kernel fixes things and just stay with the old one for now.
Thanks for the replies, and if you do happen to find a fix before that though, let me know!
Are there people with the same card (Intel GMA 4500MHD) without this problem, actually?

I had some other issues as well, which is why I installed Ubuntu at this time:
- random freezes when starting X
- resume from suspend / hibernate did not work probably due to a bug in xf86-video-intel, found a workaround for this

good rational. At any one time in history ubuntu is outdated compared to Arch. So when the fix for intel comes through upstream you'll be the last one knowing about it 6 months later.
Arch is a bleeding edge distribution. You have to expect things like this. Arch also has facilities to handle cases like these.

Yes, I know all this and I wanted to stay on Arch too, but regarding this driver, Arch is not really bleeding edge I would say:
http://archlinux.org/packages/testing/i … deo-intel/
http://gitweb.freedesktop.org/?p=xorg/d … ;a=summary
I think the latest drivers are built against the newest xorg.
I had some other issues in Arch as well, that is why I temporarily moved to Ubuntu. I need a working laptop.

By the way, it looks like Ubuntu is ahead of arch on this respect:
Ubuntu: Version: 2:2.4.1-1ubuntu10
Arch: extra/xf86-video-intel 2.3.2-1 (xorg-video-drivers)
Offline
I would advise to use xorg and xf86-video-intel from testing with recent Intel hardware.
The reason why we're not "bleeding edge" here is that all our xorg development is in testing at this moment and extra lacks any maintenance. Xorg should move out to extra quite soon though.

Apparently Xorg (7.4) has moved to extra so I can have another go now...the random freezes should be a thing of the past with the latest Xorg and xf86-video-intel packages

Yup. Xorg7.4 fixed this issue. Solved!
