Digital Camera permission

Hello. I'm running gnome 2.22 and using gtkam 0.1.12. I just tried to connect my Kodak C740 via usb and im getting an error accessing the camera.
When I try to access using gnome I get:

Could not open location 'gphoto2://[usb:004,005]/'
The default action does not support this protocol.

And when I try gtkam  i get:

Could not list folders in '/'.
An error occurred in the io-library ('Could not lock the device'): Camera is already in use.

I'm a member of the camera group, and if I run gtkam as root it works just fine. So am I missing a step? hmm

Re: Digital Camera permission

Well I have the problem ... with F-Spot !
I cannot import my photos with F-Spot whereas I can using gphoto2 command line as root.

Anybody is having the same problem ?

Re: Digital Camera permission

have the same problem, although my user is in camera group, udev matches on idVendor and idProduct of my camera and group is set to camera with mode 660, i still can't import any pics via gthumb as normal user. as root there are no problems.

i noticed, that after plugging in my camera about 5-6 devices with usb2.X_epXX are created, but only one of them without "_epXX" has camera as group.. chowning other devices to root:camera didnt help..

what might i do wrong?

Pinky, are you pondering what I'm pondering?

Re: Digital Camera permission

I'll chime in here as well.  Using a Canon PowerShot SD850 IS on a couple of different machines.  I can get gphoto2 command line to read the pics on the camera when it's plugged in but when I try to use digiKam to download the pictures it can't connect.  Anyone know what is wrong?

Re: Digital Camera permission

This seems to be a problem that hasn't been solved.  Just type in a forum search for camera permissions and see how many hits you get.  I've been having a similar problem for some time now, got fed up with all the camera apps and changed the setting on my Nikon L12 to a mass storage device from a PTP device and now use my file manager pcmanfm to handle all my photos.

This also lets me keep my minimal system approach.

Re: Digital Camera permission

I also get the "could not lock the device" error when plugging in my Canon camera via USB.  I've searched all over, including the two links above, but none of the solutions remove this error.  I've found you must unmount the device after it is automatically connected.  Then F-Spot and gThumb can access the camera without any problem...  However, if nautilus has the mounted neither of those apps will work.  Pretty ugly.
