n00b lost in openbox

i am lost :s

1.nano ~/.xinitrc
exec openbox

i tried this in orber openbox start automatically but it didnt work, after i reboot it show up a log in screen
Arch Linux 2.6.27 (myhost) (vc/1)
myhost login:

2.exec openbox
Openbox-Message : Failed to open the display from the DISPLAY enviromenment variable.

exec openbox-session
gives me errors and prompt me at log in screen again.

The only way to start openbox is by $ xinit /usr/bin/openbox-session
3. The window size when openbox runs is not correct. There is some space left in the right side. Also from Gnome Control Center, i can get resolution up to 1024x768 not bigger. I think my xorg.conf  needs fix , am i correct?
[ I followed the wiki guide but i coundnt make the correct xorg.conf right with my nvidia 6800gt sad i got nvidia drivers installed.]

thanks in advance smile

Re: n00b lost in openbox

The 1. thing should mainly mean that you can start openbox through startx from the command line.

2. Did you try startx after doing #1?

3. What does your xorg.conf look like?

I haven't lost my mind; I have a tape back-up somewhere.

em no, but i just did
#exec xterm
exec openbox
then, startx and openbox did opened! big_smile but with no background that there was before with $ xinit /usr/bin/openbox-session (should i save somehow the wallpaper ?)

Re: n00b lost in openbox

Just adding lines to ~/.xinitrc  will not magically make it run at startup. You have 3 choices:
1) start it manually using "startx" after you log in... this can be good in case you want to be able to log in without having to start up xorg etc.
2) add "startx" to ~/.bash_profile... you will still need to log in at the console but xorg and openbox will start automatically after that
3) install a login manager... I haven't done this, but this seems to be the appropriate wiki page: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/SLiM

Re: n00b lost in openbox

You want to run openbox when you login to TTY ? Without using a display manager such as GDM, KDM or Slim ?
In that case, you need to put something like this in your ~/.bash_profile:

. $HOME/.bashrc

if [[ -z "$DISPLAY" ]] && [[ $(tty) = /dev/vc/1 ]]; then
    exec xinit /usr/bin/openbox-session -- :0
    logout
fi

This will start openbox on DISPLAY 0.0 for you when you log into TTY1.

its doesnt work. sad i tryed again. And when i reboot it prompts me to log in and doesnt run openbox.
How can i make openbox run at default? through ~/.xinitrc?

Openbox does not automatically run at login. You have to log-in and then execute the command startx, which will then execute what's in your .xinitrc file.

So the normal sequence (assuming your .xinitrc file includes the line exec openbox-session) is:

* Type in your username
* Type in your password
* Type in the word startx and press [enter]

Openbox will then start.

I think this is the best way to do it. But, if you don't want to do it this way through the console, consider using a graphical login manager.

As for your problem of not being able to have a higher resolution than 1024x768, yes, it's because that's not outlined in your xorg.conf. See this part?

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

There are only three resolution options; none of them bigger than 1024x768. If you want bigger, and your monitor can handle it, and you have the right driver loaded, it should look more like:

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

That's assuming your monitor can handle higher resolutions and everything else is okay. If in doubt, don't just change your xorg.conf, but check out the installing and configuring X section of the wiki to make sure you have the right video card driver installed, etc.

Re: n00b lost in openbox

add openbox-session to .xinitrc. Then after you have logged in use startx or xinit.

Your xorg.conf shows a default color depth of 16, so do you have 1280x1024 under that section or just the 24 depth section?
Personally, I think it's silly to have a bunch of different color depths and screen resolutions, because in my case I always run it the same. So my xorg.conf is really short in the screen section; one depth and one resolution.

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
        Depth 24
                Modes "1280x1024"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

You really wouldn't like my xorg.conf then. I added 4-5 resolutions for every depth. You know, just in case big_smile

I agree, forget about the rest of the shit, who uses 16 or 8 bit color depth for a monitor mode?

My screen section

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Videocard0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    DefaultDepth 24

    Option "AddARGBVisuals" "True"
    Option "NoLogo" "True"
    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"
    Option "TwinView" "0"
    Option "PixmapCacheSize" "20000000"
    Option "AllowSHMPixmaps" "0"
    Option "metamodes" "1152x864 +0+0"
    SubSection "Display"
        Depth 24

Re: n00b lost in openbox

i followed what u said and i make it :

Section "Device"
    Identifier "Card0"
    Driver "nvidia"
    VendorName "All"
    BoardName "All"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
    Identifier "Screen0"
    Device "Card0"
    Monitor "Monitor0"
    SubSection "Display"
        Viewport 0 0
    Depth 24
        Modes "1280x1024" "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
    EndSubSection
EndSection

Does NVidia X Server Settings runs over xorg.conf  when the session starts?Because i am working on 1280x1024 before adding it as a mode at xorg.conf.I change it from  Nvidia X server Settings. Should i change video drivers?

Also i have another internal Sata with my files which i just plug it in (ntfs) but i cant reach it. Any ideas how to?

I connect the tv with my pc with a scart - s-video cable. Through NVidia X Server Settings, i enable it. But i cant choose the right resolution + the color in the tv is black & white.

Thanks in advance once again smile
