Odd Gnome behaviour

http://www.sn0n.com/cutenews/data/upima … _gnome.png

There is the 'startx' result.... now to what i did to get there.. this will be from first boot

(full install with all packages selected then reboot, log in as root.. )

passwd
pacman --sync --refresh --sysupgrade
pacman -Syu
pacman -Sy xorg
pacman -Sy pacman
joe /etc/pacman.conf     //to allow testing and then refresh pacman)
pacman -S gnome         //fetched gnome 2.8)
pacman -Sy gnome-extra
pacman -S hwd
hwd -s
cp /etc/X11/xorg.conf.hwd /etc/X11/xorg.conf
adduser
exit

(login as new user)
joe ~/.xinitrc     // exec gnome-session
startx

now it starts up fine, no errors.. but all i see is
http://www.sn0n.com/cutenews/data/upima … _gnome.png
and nothing else (i added that screenshot button since i hadda get the screenshot obviously)

im still fairly new to linux.. but think i did a decent job of getting setup and started..

[edit:] forgot to mention that everything works as far as i can tell.. Alt + F2 let me open mozilla-firefox as well as gaim..

Re: Odd Gnome behaviour

This seems normal to me, (on 2.8 anyway), you just need to set the desktop/panel(s) up how you want!  I think there should be some useful default, but I don't think it's a big deal.

If you develop an ear for sounds that are musical it is like developing an ego. You begin to refuse sounds that are not musical and that way cut yourself off from a good deal of experience.
