I'm running KDE/openbox, and I'm pretty much set with it, but I have one problem. Whenever I get an IM in pidgin, it steals focus from whatever I'm doing. I read that openbox version 3.4 and above has
New focus stealing prevention that is smart and not intrusive and not annoying
When I ran kwin inside KDE, it worked the way I expected it to, the window wouldn't jump to the front with focus. Has anyone had a similar problem, or know of a solution?

Same problem here with openBox too. I'm trying to find a fix.

That prevents me from using openbox with GNOME, since the urbanterror game keeps being interrupted byt eh focus stealing of pidgin. But never debugged it, it might be interesting to get to the root of the problem, I'll see what I can find.

I have not tested it, but you can try:
<application class="Pidgin">
<focus>no</focus>
</application>
