Starting to answer the clamorous demand from open-source fans, Adobe Systems plans to release an alpha version of its Flash Player technology on Monday for those using 64-bit Linux software.
That took long enough.

WOW! That is a major success of the whole open source community! Great news!
"... being a Linux user is sort of like living in a house inhabited by a large family of carpenters and architects. Every morning when you wake up, the house is a little different. Maybe there is a new turret, or some walls have moved. Or perhaps someone has temporarily removed the floor under your bed."

Good news! It looks as if the squeaky wheel approach works, after all:
The 64-bit support will arrive on other operating systems later, Adobe said, but Linux fans get it first because they were the most vocal in their desire for it.

What has it to do with OPEN source? I hope it won't slowdown the developement of OSS alternatives.

I agree with Andy here. I hope that the alternatives aren't slowdown their development.
Nevertheless, it's great to see that a company is listening to the complains of Linux users, but we shouldn't forget how long it takes that they release it. Don't get me wrong, it's great that they (will) release a native x86_64 version, but it took ages.

Now they only need to go forward with that open-source Flash thingy. But really great news.

someone please apply necessary changes to our AUR packages.

Hmm that article says that Windows and Macos don't have a 64bit version yet? Linux will be the first? Did I understand that correctly? All other thoughts aside, that by itself would be pretty sweet.

He hoped and prayed that there wasn't an afterlife. Then he realized there was a contradiction involved here and merely hoped that there wasn't an afterlife.

Quickly made PKGBUILD to test the plugin: http://zlin.dk/p/?NWE3YmM0 (If you use this please install the proper packages when they are out)
Works great so far.

I don't use 64bit, but really great news!! Cool thing that they really listen to the people and especially chose Linux to be the first Now, what's next? Support BSD!!!!!!!!!!!!

Workable PKGBUILD in AUR now, thanks to flamelab.

It works well, but its CPU load is over the top. In my system it switches between the cores but keep a steady load of 100 % on the core used. It's alpha so I suppose it improves.
Otherwise I agree with AndyRTR and ice, and I also hope this doesn't halt the open-source development of alternatives to Adobes proprietary one.
The move to OPENJDK6 as standard was good (this is one of those things that makes me respect Fedora in spite of some flaws; they've been working hard on getting some of these open-source projects improving), and I wish we one day get the same announcement about Flashplayer.
Still good news, and one that proves the importance of Linux even for those who don't like or don't wish to use it.

I am the maintainer of this package. Please notify me for any PKGBUILD issues and problems immediately.
Happy Youtub'ing
Should I add the mms.cfg by the archlinuxfr package ? Will it do something more ?
edit: Has been added. I read Adobe's IT instructions about mms.cfg, so it is usable.

Good. I haven't bought a 64 bit CPU yet (waiting til after xmas), but I had already decided that if I did I would be using the 32 bit Arch because I can't live without flash. This may convince me otherwise.

Wow! This means that both Adobe and the Mozilla Foundation actually did something intentionally for 64 bit.

I believe that all of Flash is open source now. It's just open source in pieces.

This is fantastic news (it's working great here)! Some more info can be found on Tinic's blog.

Great. Now we only need skype in 64 bit...

I've just installed flamelab's AUR pkg and it's working well so far, with very low CPU on my system.
This made my day. Creative labs opensourced their X-Fi drivers about a week ago (or more, my conception of time is distorted) and now we get native Flash support for 64-bit.
edit
Is it possible to configure this not to autoplay/autoload? It doesn't seem to respect my NoScript settings like Flash does on my old 32-bit system.

where did you read that flashplayer is opensource?
