fortune

Just would like to ask for the creation of a fortune group on pacman. It would make it a lot easier to install all the mods to probably the best program ever made.

Another thing I would like to suggest (but I know this probably won't happen) is to move
the fortune packages to the base distribution, so that when you install Arch, it's already
available.

See ya

I bet a goat, that you used to be (or still are) a Slackware user. How wrong am I?  roll

Re: fortune

Well, being a Slack user myself, I was a little worried the first time I logged in to Arch.  fortune-mod is just one of those almost, but not quite entirely useless, (wow, can't tell I've been reading some Douglas Adams lately), things that I, personally, simply can't live without.  I'm a fortune junkie!

Re: fortune

I never used slack and I'm kind of unsure of the connection between slack and fortune, anyone care to explain?

On another note, fortune is the greatest program ever created and has served well in my ~/.bash_profile ever since I discovered it back when I was just a linux n00b.

Yet another note, phrakture, your little profile thing says your in chicago, awesome! There are other Arch users in Chicago!!!! Now I don't feel alone anymore, let's have an Arch convention or something big_smile  .

I'd love to, as fortune-mod is just about my favorite thing in the entire world to waste my time with, (probably Slack's fault!), but a discussion about the merits of fortune-mod and it's history is probably best suited for the Off-Topic part of the forums. (See, I'm trying! wink )

That said, you'll find me there!

Re: fortune

Well, I've got to admit it. I was a slackware user smile

and with it, I found the best program ever. Actually, I was just discussing with a friend of mine
the two best contributions of BSD to the free software world were Fortune and the TCP/IP
implementation (in this order).

The relationship between fortune and slackware is that slackware is the only distro I know that
not only includes fortune by default, but it includes it on your /etc/profile, so that everytime
you log on, it displays a fortune to you.

Re: fortune

pfft while i have been amused in past by "fortune"  (quotes are not fortunes btw) it would be utterly stupid to include it as default because then there would be no reason one could give to have other clutter in a base install.

Re: fortune

So, with the 18 new packages, isn't it time for the creation of a fortune group ??
I think the group feature of pacman is much underused. I have only seen it being
used for kde and gnome until now.
There are probably alot more groups that could be created. A xmms group with the
plugins would probably be nice too.

i agree, that more groups would be nice

these groups exist:

gnome
gnome-extra
kde
ladspa-plugins
xfce4
xfce4-goodies
xmms-effect-plugins
xmms-general-plugins
xmms-io-plugins
xmms-plugins
xmms-visualization-plugins

Re: fortune

Group is a nice idea but just remember that some fortunes are in different languages and some can conflict with others (for example fortune-mod-pl will conflict with fortune-mod-kernelcookies. I can easly fix this by changing name of kernelcookies file in Polish version or by removing it completly. I could also split fortune-mod-pl into several separate packages but I think it's not really worth it - most files are small). IMO there could be one fortunes-mod-en or just fortunes-mod group and other langages should be installed separately.

i'm not (longer) responsible ;-) i was the contributor of the mods that are now in extra, yes big_smile ... but i will have a look at the new ones lanrat made and maybe include them in extra (next weekend or so) --- of course, if not another package-maintainer is faster than me

fortune is maybe the most usefull thing you can have in a computer --- booting windows, i always run coLinux to have fortune :-)

by the way: if you set locales in debian (coLinux) to german, fortune gives you fortunes in german --- where do you find german fortunes on the net? (or french or other language ones?) (i don't mean debian pkgs, i mean the sources)

I tried google, but couldn't find anything but Debian pkgs, and NetBSD's ports listing, which just refers to the Debian pkgs.  Oh, and I was looking for German fortunes, and I'm not sure of the availablilty of others.  lanrat seem to have found some Polish ones, but they're rpms.

Re: fortune

I had to use srcrpms/tar.gz from other distros because there was no alternative. It seems that some distros maintain fortune files only in their repos. It's not really important because these are only text files so no harm is done when you repackage/recreate .dat files. For srcrpms rpmunpack works really well. And you don't have to use .deb packages because debian sources (orig) are also avialable in tar.gz.

I'm also looking for fortunes (or text files which can be converted to fortune files) with tips and tricks about linux commands etc. Something similar to freebsd fortune files.

We could also set up a forum or wiki for arch users to post short arch related tips and tricks (like pacman usage, abs, funny quotes from the forums, etc.) so we could convert them later to a fortune file (you only need to separate fortunes in a text file with % that's all) and make a package. What do you think about it? I know some distros have something like this. It could be quite functional especially for arch newbies.

I found a lot of other fortune files for different languages but since I couldn't understand them I did not make pkgbuilds for them :-). It's hard to find them with google or other tools but it is possible. Feel free to make pkgbuilds for them. A few links for non-english fortune files (and not only - bible, mormon, law,...) from my cache:

Re: fortune

added the following fortune-mods to extra:

fortune-mod-bofh-excuses
fortune-mod-bond
fortune-mod-familyguy
fortune-mod-friends
fortune-mod-hayward
fortune-mod-homer
fortune-mod-humorix
fortune-mod-jargon
fortune-mod-joel-on-software
fortune-mod-kernelnewbies
fortune-mod-matrix
fortune-mod-oneliners
fortune-mod-shlomif
fortune-mod-shlomif-fav
fortune-mod-smac
fortune-mod-spblu
fortune-mod-subversion
fortune-mod-zx-error

by the way: they are members of the new group fortune-mods

one more thing:
i don't have yet a concept how to add non-english mods. open questions:

- how should they be grouped (suggestion: fortune-mods-$LC (LC={de_CH,de,fr,pl,...}))

- how should they be named? (suggetsion: fortune-mod-$modname-$LC)

- how do debian handle them over language-settings of the system? if you set LANG in debian to de, you get automatically german fortunes (implementation: no idea)

Re: fortune

Oh, I've read the other thread first and suggested some things there too...

If you mean pacman group freature then I think in case of translations of the standard cookies they don't really need group because they should be packaged in one file like fortune-mod-de and installed to /usr/share/fortune/de. This means I should change the name of fortunes-mod-pl to something like fortune-mod-extra-pl because they are not really translations. And fortune-mod-bofh-excuses-pl (which I think is a translation of fortune-mod-bofh-excuses) should go to /usr/share/fortune/pl).

I made a simple experiment:
make /usr/share/fortune/pl and move there some fortune file (doesn't really matter which one - I made a new one with test1, test2 lines separated with lines with % char only to be sure it really works).
Run

LC_ALL=pl_PL fortune

several times. It will only display cookies from /usr/share/fortune/pl. I guess it works well with locale then and you can move translations to /usr/share/fortune-$LC

BTW I just realized that some non-english fortune files are available from http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/games/ … INDEX.html which is also used as the source url for main arch fortune-mod package.

And there is also another fortune package (improved?) available http://www.redellipse.net/code/fortune that seems to be still actively developed and it can also work with utf-8 files Maybe we should check if it's not worth to make a package for it?

talking about bookmarks collection, you guys should really check out :

Unfortunately it's not open source, but hopefully not for long.
