So it's like Arch is if you choose not to install X?
Edit: It's like arch is if you choose not to install X, and then take the time to make a neat menu-based interface.

Every Arch user without a graphical login manager must be 1337 then (but of course we already knew that).
If you want the console, just log into your Arch system and don't type startx
But I suppose it might be interesting for the Ubuntu users who never really ventured as far as a terminal prompt.

And if you use a graphical login, just add something like this to /boot/grub/menu.lst:
# (0) Arch Linux
title Textmode Arch Linux
root (hd0,5)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz26 root=/dev/sda6 ro 3
initrd /boot/kernel26.img
For this to work you must not launch the login manager (kdm, gdm...) in the DAEMONS section of rc.conf, but in /etc/inittab (see wiki for a detailed explanation).
This way you can choose at boot time if you want all the graphical candy or a plain text session. Useful when you just want to have a look at something and want to boot ASAP.

Genius! I want it NOW!
As far as I can see this is offered as one package distribution, so it's not that easy to install on Arch I guess...

Seems fun. I'm gonna try it in a virtual machine.
Oh and I seem to have stopped being l33t seeing as how I started using GDM again
Can I still try this out ?
The day Microsoft makes a product that doesn't suck, is the day they make a vacuum cleaner.

But if they tell you that I've lost my mind, maybe it's not gone just a little hard to find...

I don't think so...unless you remove GDM.
I seen some screencasts some time ago. Nice idea.

Looks like a complete waste of time to me.

Well, I'm not an ubuntu user although ubuntu has it's own merits and it's a valid distribution, but there is also an ubuntu server edition.

And guess what? It's CLI based.

Oops..to me ubuntu has always been something like a Packed Panda. Really, I have no idea what merits it has without its complete GUI environment. I am just too convenient with Arch to dig into it.

I ran ubuntu server edition for quite two years in a virtual machine. It was a developing purpose server. Maybe it's not so suited for a production server because it's basically an debian unstable but LTS edition can be a choice. I like Archlinux. It's my workstation and desktop but in the period I ran Ubuntu server I must confess I didn't had any problem. And I made three dist-upgrades. So, IMHO it has it's own merits.

So, am I. But I chose Arch after I have tried other distributions. I think that also this project has its own merits. You know, maybe some people will try also CLI interface thanks to this project. Once they understand that CLI it's just a different computer interface and it's not so scarry they could try it.
Maybe they will learn something else or will be motivated to improve they knowledge about gnu/linux this way.
Or maybe I'm just an optimist.

Well, this is nonsense. Perhaps installing Debian Sid and freezing it would do the same point.

Does it matter on which platform it runs? I mean, the idea is what matters (by the way, Ubuntu is the server of choice for Wikipedia).
I think the idea is pretty cool. WIMP is not that great in my opinion, so this new DE opens up the way for new possibilities, who knows... if only one was able to integrate more graphics into it...

Yes, this is non-sense because ubuntu is not designed to run in CLI mode, but instead it runs with a GUI... it's their philosofy to choose the GUI's over manual configurations and/or CLI's... better that that, I'd choose for learning how a Linux system works, Arch or maybe Gentoo or Debian, BUT NEVER UBUNTU.
Ubuntu is a desktop system, period.

What do you base that on?

Check finferflu's post, I guess you know better than everybody over at wikipedia.
