hello folks, I finally get my Nvidia riva tnt2 m64 to work with direct rendering but I get too low fps, over 500 fps with glxgears, when I activate gnome composite manager, everything is too slow so I need some help, anyone?

Your video card is terribly old, I wouldn't expect too much from it, a score of 500 sounds reasonable for the specification of the card [1]. I don't think using composite will be within your hardwares capabilities.

Though I wouldn't take my definitive oppinion on it, I am however pretty certain that you will not be capable of utilsing most of the "eye candy" supplied by composite and its variants. Sorry.

That number sound about right -- I used to get int eh 1500s with an FX5600 card. I'd say that with anything less than a GeForce 256 or better you'd not be able to use composite.

I don't know what are you talking about guys .
I have an old FX-5200 with the nvidia-173xx driver and I get 430 FPS average . I'm running Compiz Fusion+Emerald and It's working just fine .

Yes but a riva TNT2 is at least 3 chip generations behind the FX-5200 in, in terms of supported chip features, such as hardware T&L.

I owned riva tnt2 card myself, was a great card back in the late 90's if memory serves me correctly. I say 500 FPS is a bargin for that card. Not to mention, that card has to be a legacy card by now, if you are getting 500 FPS with new 173 drivers then feel even more lucky.

Yeah, the riva chip doesn't have TnL support and was replaced by the first generation of GeForce card that did support hardware TnL.
