abiword crashes when choosing 'create and modify styles'

As the title says, it crashes consistently whnever I attempt opening this dialog.
I get the following error:

*** glibc detected *** abiword: free(): invalid pointer: 0x0991a5a8 ***

followed by a lot of lines headed by "Backtrace" and then more lines headed by "Memory map".

I have installed abiword and abiword-plugins. I tried uninstalling the plugins and then starting abiword - same thing happens. Bug tracker contains no mention - can anybody explain and/or reproduce this?
