I'm not sure if it's gnome or hal or dbus so bear with me.
But whenever I plug in my flash drive, it mounts properly, letting me access and read files, and generally use it the way it should.
However, if I disconnect it without unmounting it first, it doesn't disappear, the device still appears as connected, except you can't unmount it.
If you reconnect the flash drive, it doesn't just reconnect, it registers as an entirely new device.
I can't seem to figure out why it's doing this, so any help would be great, I'm not sure what direction to go into in the system, and all the threads I could find on my problem in the forums seem to have part of my problem, and something entirely new that isn't related to my problem at all, so I'm not sure what to try.

have you tried unmounting the device before unplugging it?
unplugging a mounted device has a risk of corrupting the drive + the sideeffects you've seen.

Yeah, that works fine, however most other distros I use don't act the same way, they just clean it up and unmount it on disconnect, I don't have to right click and unmount.
I'm not really writing to it or anything, so it hasn't hurt the drive, but I understand what you mean, most of my teachers drilled it into our heads when using windows that yanking the usb drive can hurt it.
I guess I just want it to behave like ubuntu, however I don't know how they do it so I can't necessarily carry that idea to Arch.

You might be interested in the solution suggested by lanrat in this thread: http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=46944

You can use the lazy unmount option from the CLI to remove the leftover device. I'd say just to unmount them before yanking, but hey.

Interesting, it might not be so bad now that I know how to get rid of the icon.
I'm just used to the windows/ubuntu way of handling usb drives, it's just sort of annoying that the icon doesn't go away and it duplicates my drive pretty much when I reconnect it.
Thanks
