I have firefox 0.9.3 and java 1.4.2 and whenever I try to view a page with a Java applet firefox crashes.
I read somewhere that this happens if you copy the plugin rather than link to it, but It have linked to it.
Any ideas?

I have the same problem This also happens with flash too

Do you have and use the user agent switcher plugin, if so try turning it back to default and see if it is the problem.

I don't have anything like that...

I do have that - but I've had the problem since before I installed it so I doubt it's related.
I have returned it to default anyway - just in case. Don;t have a chance to confirm if this has made a difference yet - but, as I say, I doubt it will.

My problem is unrelated to flash - I have no problems with viewing flash. This is purely a java issue

Gimme a page I can go to so I can try it out myself.
I'm a poker freak and play online a lot and that site uses nothing but java applets. I have no problems there at all.
I'm using jave 1.4.2 and firefox 0.93.
By the way, I think you have it backwards. In my experience, there are a few plugins which will ALWAYS fail if you make a softlink. I can tell you from many a browser install, if I do not copy the plugin to the browser plugin path, just a symlink will always fail. And, I remember java being one of those few troublemakers. Mplayer, Realplayer, and flash are all softlinks for me and never caused a problem, but java softlinking (especially older version) always did. Now, that's just my experience...

which plugin did you link to?
I think .9 series required you symlink to the ns610-gcc32 (or something...don't recall exactly what it is called) version of the plugin....
if that doesn't work, or if that is the one you are using, just try the other one..
ns610 (without the -gcc).

I did link to the gcc one - or at least I think I did.
I tried copying the plugin and this also caused a crash, but when I re-created the link it seems fine.
Thanks for all the help
